Internship informationGeneral Farm Description: Grassward Dairy provides delicious, high-quality, farmstead milk, cream and yogurt, produced with the highest standards for the animals, land and craft. We work with Old World breed cows raised in a management intensive grazing system on 50 acres in the Coast Range west of Corvallis, east of Newport. We operate without reliance on hormones, antibiotics, confinement, or excessive grain – all of which are standard in modern dairies.
CRAFT Member Farm? No
Internship Starts: March 1, 2021
Internship Ends: TBD
Number of Internship Available: 1
Application Deadline: ASAP
Minimum Length of Stay: 6 months
Interns participate in all aspects of farmstead dairy production, including care for the land, animals, feed and milk. In spring we’re busy with rotational grazing, fencing and forage crop gardening; in summer we’re making hay and irrigating pastures and garden. Daily chores include care for 4 groups of animals: bottle-fed calves, weaned calves, yearling heifers/steers/dry cows and lactating cows.
Our ideal intern is detail-oriented (notices the little things with all 5 senses), thorough (completes a task 100%), organized (contributes to the flow of a well-oiled machine), communicates clearly (gets their own needs met, as well our animals’ needs), and strong (we move a lot of hay and manure).
We want to train a person to do the morning milking one day a week.
Educational Opportunities: Farmstead dairying is a system-based farming practice and includes knowledge and practice in many areas: equipment maintenance and repair; planning in land use and milk production; fertility use, application and storage; animal nutrition and care; food safety; and more. We are part of a vibrant farm community and can arrange visits with other farms of various styles.
Skills Desired: Above all, communication skills where a person can assert their needs and desires to ensure reaching personal goals of experiential education. Additionally, willingness to be attentive to detail.
Stipend: A monthly stipend (TBD) in addition to housing, high-quality farm-produced food and education.
Preferred method of Contact: email at first, then phone
