Internship information
General Farm Description: Green Cedar Farm is a diverse 15-acre CCOF certified organic orchard located at nearly 3000 foot elevation in the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The primary fruits grown are apples, blueberries, pears, cherries and peaches, including many specialty varieties. We primarily do farmers' markets, a CSA, and wholesaling. Aside from growing quality organic fruit for marketing, we also maintain a large family vegetable garden for our use. Our farmscaping includes edible plants and herbs, as well as habitat for native pollinators, beneficial insects and animals for natural pest control. In addition, we farmscape to provide shade and beauty. We also harvest wild foods on our property and surrounding mountains. Green Cedar Farm has been certified organic by CCOF for over 25 years. Forests surround us and beautiful granite outcrops are numerous in this area. We are above Lake Oroville, near the Plumas National Forest and the Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Feather River. There will be opportunities for hiking, swimming, canoeing, fishing, and many other outdoor activities. Our farming lifestyle is committed to pursuing a balanced, dynamic, creative way to live and experience good health. We incorporate basic science and research principles, creative thinking, and holistic observation in our farming approach. Working with nature, developing ecological harmony, and sustainability are our principal driving concepts.

We offer a quiet rural experience in a small mountain community. Green Cedar Farm is 45 minutes from the nearest town. We offer a place to get to know the natural world at a deeper level, and to understand food systems from a number of perspectives.

Educational Opportunities: Routine discussion periods, readings on pertinent topics (primarily done around the meals), hands-on instruction, books, media, and other educational materials are utilized. We spend a lot of personal time educating and working with our interns throughout the day. Visits to other local farms or food-related businesses are also offered. We emphasize methods for observing nature and general environmental/self awareness. A variety of food preservation techniques like canning, fermenting, and drying will be emphasized. We cover topics that vary from the philosophical to the very practical. Experience will be gained with gardening and orcharding. If interested, interns can take on a project of their own that connects to agriculture or food systems. Marketing direct to consumer and relationship skills are emphasized.

Skills Desired: Interns must be willing to be a fully involved participant in our farming program, including our educational discussions/readings and other activities. Also, it is essential that each intern is a cooperative member of our team; honest, flexible, in good health and physical condition. Use of basic gardening tools is very helpful. Good communication skills are a must. Having your own transportation is helpful, but not necessary.

Meals: All food needs will be provided, emphasizing organic, fresh, local ingredients, many from the farm. We eat and prepare meals together. Interns help with food preparation/clean up. Family-style meals are provided in the shared areas of the main house.

Stipend: Inquire about monthly stipend. On site housing includes separate rooms and full bathroom. Family style organic meals are fully provided, as well as most other living expenses. If you are only looking for a job or paid work, this is not the position for you. This is primarily an immersive educational experience.
