Internship information
General Farm Description: "Lynnhaven is a small goat dairy and creamery tucked against the beautiful Shawangunk Ridge in Pine Bush, NY. We make fresh cheeses and sell to upscale restaurants and at NYC Greenmarkets. This year we will freshen approximately 200 Nubians and Lamanchas, which we also show at various local shows. We sell goat meat at most of the markets we attend which is harvested from our excess kids."

CRAFT Member Farm? No

Internship Starts: Immediate
Internship Ends: Rolling--Interns are needed year round
Number of Internship Available: 1
Application Deadline: Until filled
Minimum Length of Stay: "6 months(negotiable), preference given to those who can stay longer"

Internship Details:

“Intern is needed to fit in as part of our small family-run farm to work side by side with us. Intern will be expected to participate in all aspects of animal care, farm maintenance and cheese-making. At this time of year, the internship is TOTAL immersion in all things goat! We work hard, and hours can be long, but we make time for relaxation as well. Work is 6 days a week snd can be 60 hours per week. We are 1 1/2 hours from NYC, 20 minutes from New Paltz, Minnewaska and Mohonk. We are in a very rural setting. A clean driver's license is a must. Ability to lift minimum of 50 lbs. Non-smokers only, and no pets as we have 4 dogs and numerous cats ourselves.”

Educational Opportunities: "At this time, our primary focus is kidding and kid-rearing. There are 80 goats due in March alone, so there is little time for anything but kidding, kid care, bottle feeding, etc. We hand raise the vast majority of our kids and this is very time and labor intensive. Opportunity to learn all aspects of goat husbandry, cheese-making and marketing. We attend three weekly Greenmarkets in NYC and several upstate markets. THe majority of the interns's time will be spent on the farm, but there is also opportunity to work in the creamery. We offer experience in dealing with the challenges of running a small goat dairy. This includes, but is not limited to all aspects of dairy goat care from kidding and kid care to milking, hoof-trimming, and routine veterinary care. We also show our award-winning herd of dairy goats, so intern may attend various local shows with our show string--ability to drive a truck and trailer (or at least learn) will be a plus. We have a flock of bourbon red turkeys, laying hens, Muscovy ducks, and sebastopol geese."

Skills Desired: "Previous work with animals is a plus but not a necessity. A caring personality with a enthusiasm and a desire to learn is much more important. Our goats feed our family, so it is imperative that they receive loving care in return. Responsibility and reliability are a must, but a sense of humor and flexibility are a big plus. This is a very physical position, with long hours. If you are looking for a place to relax and hang out for the summer, this will probably not be the position for you."

Meals: "The kitchen is available for cooking. As I am not a cook and rarely have time, intern will likely share in meal preparation, or at least prepare own meals. Room and limited board are provided. I will provide staples for cooking and some food items. Purchase of specialty items will be the responsibility of the intern."

Stipend: "We offer $100/week stipend plus room and board as noted above for the first month. After the successful completion of the first month, stipend will be increased to $200/week"

Housing: "Housing is a heated camper trailer on the farm. Kitchen and bathroom facilities in the house 30 feet away. Cable TV, phone and wi-fi internet access available. A visit to our farm is desirable as part of the interview process, but may not be practical. Ideally, a day's work will also be part of the interview process. This will benefit you as well as us, as it will insure that we all start on the "same page"."

Preferred method of Contact: E-mail to be followed by phone.
