Moose Meadow Farm is seeking an enthusiastic farm hand for the 2020 season and beyond. This is a permanent position; it will be year-round work in perpetuity for the right person, with room to grow into an assistant manager or farm manager role. Start date April 1 2020.
Educational Opportunities: Currently, the vegetable production is managed entirely by owners Katherine and Spencer, and we employ a part-time driver to handle deliveries. The crew- member would therefore work closely with the farm owners in all aspects of day-to-day vegetable production.
Skills Desired: Farming is a job that requires myriad skills and tasks. Some or all of the following will be included in this position, but the vast majority of the position will be spent in vegetable and flower production: • Driving deliveries • Construction • Customer interaction • CSA distribution • Seedling production • Transplanting • Social media updates • Website upkeep • Basic accounting • Record keeping • Bed preparation/turnover • Snow removal • Harvest/Wash/Pack • Ordering supplies • Hoeing/cultivation • Greenhouse management (pruning, trellising)
Stipend: This will be a salaried position, so that the employee receives an even year-round income despite the seasonally variable workload. Compensation will depend on experience, but we expect a qualified candidate to be paid $20-$25k in the first year, with yearly performance-based raises after that. We expect the work to be between 1500 and 2000 hours per year, probably more specifically between 1600 and 1800 hours. Note that this averages slightly LESS than 40hrs/week year-round. Vegetables will be included as compensation as they are available throughout the year. We offer 2 weeks of paid time off, but not more than 1 full week during the summer growing season. The other week can be taken in the winter, or if preferred, both can be taken in the winter. After the first calendar year, we will offer a $250 voucher to purchase work-related clothing or footwear, performance-based salary increases, increases in paid time off, maternity/paternity leave, farm-branded apparel, and an increase in responsibilities based on worker’s interests and desires.
