Internship informationGeneral Farm Description: Plenty! is a non-profit organization whose mission is to nourish community and preserve Floyd County traditions by growing and sharing food while enlivening the greater conversation about sustainable food practices. Plenty! Farm is home to the Plenty! Fresh Food Pantry as well as the center for several food sharing programs and educational gatherings. Plenty values freshness in programs and generosity in giving and receiving. Plenty! is a welcoming and inclusive community. The farm rotates 2 acres, a 2100 sq. ft. high tunnel and a small greenhouse through mixed annual and perennial vegetable and fruit production using organic management. Educational opportunities: Interns’ primary focus will be the farm, but there are many opportunities to learn and participate in initiatives to reduce food waste and increase access to food for all people. Interns will gain beginning-level knowledge and skills for small scale sustainable agriculture. Interns will gain experience and perspectives on other scales and approaches to agriculture through visits to area farms for gleaning and other activities. Interns will explore ideas and practices related to food access, food sovereignty and diverting food waste. They will have hands on involvement in community level strategies for diverting food waste for hunger relief, educating for food and growing skills and food sovereignty. They will further explore inter-organizational approaches to building community health and well-being.
Internship Details: Plenty Farm provides a unique opportunity to learn hands-on fruit and vegetable production on a working (non-commercial) farm that is focused on service to the community. Most food grown on the farm goes to the food programs such as the food pantry, produce home delivery, and community lunch. Plenty! partners closely with local farms, schools and other community organizations to further common goals in Floyd County. The farm uses hand tools for most field work, a tractor for primary tillage and drip irrigation. The farm has one high tunnel and a small green house for season extension and propagation.
Interns should be prepared to work in all weather on a variety of farm tasks that follow the seasonal needs of production. Daily tasks include bed preparation, direct seeding, transplanting, weeding, cultivation, pest identification and management, harvesting, cover cropping, and mulching. Non-farming activities will include collecting food and gleaning at other farms, participating in and teaching classes about growing, and other food skills, and diverting other food waste. Interns will work directly with the Farm Lead. There may be times when interns are needed to work with farm-related programs off-site such as school gardens. Interns that work a full season will have the opportunity to develop independent work skills.
Term: Plenty Farm! is seeking interns beginning in late March to work through the season to late November. Plenty! is seeking at least one intern for the entire season. Two additional intern positions may be broken into smaller periods to accommodate school schedules and other commitments. Certain work periods as well as some rotating evening and weekend assignments are required and will be discussed during the selection process. Plenty! is willing to work with students to tailor their intern experience to gain school credit.
Supervision and evaluation: Interns are supervised by the Assistant Director, an experienced farmer and market grower with a strong professional and service background in food access and community development. Interns develop educational plan for their internship with the Assistant Director. Interns receive ongoing feedback and participate in a formal final evaluation.

Skills Desired: Skills desired: Interns are expected to have some knowledge of organic farming / sustainable agriculture but no prior experience is necessary. A strong interest in food production as it relates to food security, nutrition access and community building is preferable. Interns need to be friendly, have strong communication skills, be willing to interact with the public, and work with volunteers of all ages and abilities. Interns must possess a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Interns must be able to lift 50 pounds.
Meals: Food: Produce from the farm is available. Interns are encouraged to attend the weekly community lunch that is cooked at the farm. Interns are encouraged to use the food pantry as needed. Interns may use the kitchen facility at the farm when they are onsite as operations permit.
Stipend: Stipend: This is an unpaid internship. A limited transportation stipend may be available to interns travelling from nearby locales. Intern commitments are part-time to permit work for income.
Housing: Housing: No housing is provided, however; we can assist in locating affordable options in the community if needed. Personal transportation required for travel to and from off site local housing.
