Internship information
General Farm Description: We are a small family goat dairy and creamery milking a herd of 12-16 dairy goats and crafting a variety of artisan goat milk cheeses which we sell at area farmers markets, local stores and wineries. We also supplement the milk we produce with milk we purchase from another small goat dairy. Our farm is located just outside of Martinsburg WV - 1.5 hrs from Washington DC, close to recreational activities, historical sites, MARC train station. Shepherd University is 10 minutes from our farm. Willing to work schedule with students enrolled at Shepherd.

Internship Details:

10 month internship – Mid February through Mid December. Duties will vary throughout the season but will include maternity and baby care early in the season, daily milking, and animal care, various farm related tasks including help with haying, small farm maintenance/repair, help in the creamery in all aspects of cheese making, assistance with weekend farmers market (Saturday or Sunday). Two days off each week (to be coordinated with intern and farm needs). Housing in our on farm travel trailer. Biweekly stipend, housing, some food from farm production, plus bonus at end of the season for completing the season.


Educational Opportunities: Intern is welcome, but not required to attend WV small farms conference with me Feb 19-21 in Charleston WV where I will be speaking. Opportunity for candidate interested in cheese making to learn the craft - interest driven but could include all aspects of business/cheese making

Skills Desired: Happy to train, but we expect intern to know how to work hard, be observant and aware to catch any problems early, and have common sense, cheerful attitude and a willingness to learn.

Meals: Intern is welcome to share in our production - we raise pork, goat, sometimes beef, milk, eggs, cheese.

Stipend: Yes - biweekly stipend plus housing and some food plus a bonus for completing the internship

Housing: Yes- housing will be in our on farm travel trailer equipped with double bed, kitchen, bathroom. Access to house laundry, kitchen, shower (if you prefer) and fellowship!
