Internship information
General Farm Description: Sweet Greens Farm is a family farm in central Virginia committed to sustainable agriculture. We grow a great diversity of vegetables and specialty cut flowers on about 5 acres of our 65 acre property. We have two production systems on our farm - handscale (using tools like a motorhoe and broadfork) in our 1/4 acre of hightunnels, and tractor cultivation on the majority of our acreage. We grow everything in soil and value the nutrient density of the food we produce. While we follow organic practices, we are not certified organic. We power our systems with the biology of the soil through the use of cover crops, crop rotation and compost. Established in 2016, we serve the Charlottesville and Richmond Virginia areas. We direct market through farmers markets, CSA, and online ordering. We also wholesale our vegetables and cut-flowers, and we are part of a cut-flower coop.

Internship Details:

We are looking for a farmer to join us for the remainder of the 2022 season! The position can be part time or full time and involves all aspects of farm production. This time of year we are harvesting lots of flowers and veggies, maintaining and weeding existing crops and planting and preparing flowers for bloom next spring.

This is great for someone who is considering a career in farming as you will learn everything you need to be able to farm on your own. It is also great for someone who wants to experience a season farming to expand your knowledge of agriculture and aptitude for growing plants. We have a structured schedule and work approximately 8 hour days Monday-Friday, plus rotating Saturday market responsibilities. Our training is rooted in an apprenticeship model of learning- we demonstrate a task, then work with you on it, observing and assisting you until you are confident in doing it independently. This position is best suited for someone who works well independently and also enjoys working as part of a team. We tackle many projects as a group – think potato harvest, planting greens- but we also do many projects in pairs – like putting on rowcover,- or on your own- bunching kale, beets, etc. Our goal is to train our employees so they are confident enough in a task to be able to execute it independently.  Our property is very peaceful; set amidst rolling hills, creeks, native plants and trees, a pond and lots of wildlife.

Ideal candidates will have a positive attitude in all weather conditions, a strong interest in food, flowers and farming, be capable of working at an efficient pace and enjoy working outdoors both on a team and individually.

You will report to the farm owners/managers, and will work both independently and alongside the farm owners and one or more employees on a wide variety of tasks.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

Field work including weeding, planting, field preparation and farm maintenance
Harvesting, washing and packing produce
Cutting, processing and bunching flowers and assembling bouquets
Greenhouse work including seeding, propagation and maintenance
Cleaning, sanitizing and organizing equipment and materials
Selling vegetables and flowers directly to the public at the farmers market Saturday mornings

Our Covid policy requires that employees are fully vaccinated.

Educational Opportunities: There is a large educational and vocational training aspect to this job. We have over 20 years combined experience in sustainable agriculture, farming and floral design and are happy to share our knowledge and experiences with you. Expect to learn all the tools you need to grow a wide variety of vegetables and flowers on a variety of scales.

Skills Desired: Farm workers are required to stand, bend, kneel, squat, cut/snip and lift and move at least 50 pounds, repeatedly for extended periods of time. You must be able to have a positive attitude and work efficiently outdoors in all weather conditions. We expect you to enjoy working both on a team and individually . We live in a rural area, so reliable transportation and a drivers license are required. You should have experience working on a farm or performing other outdoor physical work in a fast paced team environment. You should have the desire to pursue farming as a career and learn new farming systems. We value the ability to focus on quality and pay attention to detail while working with speed. Customer service experience and skills are a plus.

Meals: Free staff produce and flowers are available for personal consumption.

Stipend: Compensation is $15/hr, free produce and flowers and extensive training in sustainable vegetable and cut flower production.

Housing: Housing is available in a newly renovated historic duplex in downtown Scottsville. Rent is $500/month including utilities. The town of Scottsville is a 5 minute drive, the city of Charlottesville is a 25 minute drive.
