General Farm Description: What Cheer Flower Farm is a nonprofit urban flower farm in Providence, RI that gives all of the flowers we grow away for free, via hospitals, senior homes, recovery centers and food banks. In 2018 the Farm donated over 10,000 flowers. This year our goal is to donate 30,000 flowers to people who need to feel our community's care.

Internship Details:

Assist the Director of Horticulture with overall farm operations.
Task descriptions:
Care of annual and perennial plants including:
-Timely and efficient production of seedlings at off-site grow spaces as well as on-site at our urban farm
-Soil preparations and maintenance: forming and amending beds
-Assist with planting, watering, weeding, maintenance and harvesting and anything else that needs to get done
– Install and maintain drip irrigation, row cover and trellising
– Assist with implementation and monitoring of integrated pest management
– Assist with monitoring common pests, bacterial, fungal and viral diseases on farm
– Operate and maintain garden tools and equipment for both safety and function
– Cleaning and sterilizing of pots, flats and harvest equipment
– Process and fill cut flower orders
Additional responsibilities:
– Interact with visitors in a friendly and helpful manner
– Work and communicate with volunteers effectively
-Deliver flower orders to partner organizations in a professional and respectful manner

Educational Opportunities:

Skills Desired: Minimum Skills and qualifications: - Willingness to learn and serious interest in the cut flower farm or other plant-based industries - Previous flower, gardening and/or vegetable farming experience preferred -Competent with small farming tools - Ability to work on the ground (bending, stooping, kneeling) for several hours and enjoy repetitive tasks - Ability to lift up to 60 lbs - Ability to work effectively with a team and independently - Ability to work in all weather conditions - Valid driver's license - Reliable, punctual and responsible

Stipend: $12-$14/ hour depending on experience
