General Description: Calypso Farm & Ecology Center is a small, diversified educational farm outside of Fairbanks, Alaska. Calypso's education programs include farm field trips, summer camps, workshops, farmer training programs and a network of school gardens. A fully working production farm, Calypso produces 3 acres of vegetables, herbs and flowers, fiber products from our flock of Shetland Sheep and metal works from our Blacksmith Shop.
Calypso Farm and Ecology Center offers a fun, intensive Farmer Training Program, including all aspects of ecological agriculture as well as farm business planning and hand skills such as black-smithing, wool processing, mechanics, building, food preservation, natural alignment and injury prevention and more. Minimum Length of Stay: 5 months
Meals: Farm lunch is provided Monday through Friday. Basic whole foods (grains, beans, nuts, dried fruit, oils, vegetables, some dairy and eggs) are provided throughout the program. Note:fresh vegetables from the field come into production by late May and continue in great bounty through the rest of the season
Skills Desired: No skills required, but a great desire to learn about farming and farm management is needed. Students are selected based on level of interest and potential for future application of what they've learned.

Get the skills and hands-on experience you need to make it happen at Calypso Farm and Ecology Center, a diversified 3-acre educational farm, producing vegetables, herbs and cut flowers in the heart of Interior Alaska. Calypso's 5 month, residential Farmer Training Program immerses participants in all aspects of farming: production, creativity and business planning.
| Gain the FARM PRODUCTION SKILLS necessary for farming success: building healthy soil, greenhouse growing, irrigation, composting, animal husbandry, field planning, cultivation, harvest, CSA operations, farm infrastructure, farm equipment use, and using your working body safely.
| Weekly WHOLE FARM PLANNING sessions lead you through the process of building a comprehensive business plan for a future farm, from choosing land and areas of production to marketing and creating a budget.
| Build CREATIVITY AND HOMESTEADING SKILLS through exposure to green wood carving, birch bark, food preservation, blacksmithing, wool processing, construction, printmaking, and more.
| Have your own SPECIAL INTERESTS? Calypso's staff will work with you to gear the program to your specific learning goals. Participants will have the opportunity to be involved in Calypso's FARM-BASED EDUCATION , explore value-added product production, and work with Calypso's FOOD JUSTICE initiatives.
COLLEGE CREDIT for this program is available through the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.
Housing: Program participants are provided with rustic accommodations, a shared kitchen and shared sauna.

Internship Details: Calypso's Farmer Training Program is an intensive experiential education program focused on providing the skills, inspiration and experience necessary for participants to embark on starting their own small farm with confidence. A small group (3-8 people) of aspiring farmers participate in the program each year - allowing for a high level of personalized attention.
