General Description: Synergy Gardens is a 5 acre micro-farm located east of Homer, AK. We cultivate two acres of mixed vegetables, garlic and edible flowers bio-intensively. We promote soil health. To ensure living soils, we cover crop, make and add compost, use vermiculture, mulch, and rotate crops. We market with restaurant sales, a CSA, Farmers Market, and an online food hub, Alaska Food Hub. We are dedicated to growing nutrient rich dense food to our community, sharing our farm through scheduled tours, an Annual Garlic Fest Farm to Table Event, and are continually involved in sustainable food education.

Meals: Most meals are family shared from farm fresh ingredients. A Farm share is included with the stipend.

Educational Opportunities: Educational Opportunities: The Field Assistants will be learning most aspects of small scale farming: Soil blending; seeding; direct seeding with new seeders; transplanting; bed and field preparation; compost making; compost material gathering; fertilization; soil test sampling; cultivation; irrigation; pest scouting; pruning; harvest; hoop house management; season extension methods; fence building; record keeping; restaurant sales; marketing; harvest and crop cleaning. Direct instruction and hands on learning will be utilized to facilitate a detailed educational experience. We aim for clear communication; we provide opportunities for feedback and evaluation with weekly meetings and periodic evaluations. Educational aspects also include: beekeeping, poultry care and harvest; succession sowing and crop rotations. We are incorporating visits and work trade opportunities to other area farms and high tunnels to broaden learning experiences.

Stipend: $800. per month based on experience $600.00 per month for little to no experience

Housing: Options are: private dry cabin with electricity; large outfitted bus with kitchen; apartment in Farm Shop; a tent platform with a view for camping available; or using your RV. ALL with indoor hot showers and laundry facilities.

Internship Details: At Synergy Gardens we farm from 8-6 PM with 1/2 hour lunches and two breaks per day. An Internship is 40 hours per week, great learning opportunities, a book study of The Market Gardener by Jean Martin Fortier, a great extensive reference library available, a Farm Share, a monthly stipend and use of a bicycle as needed. One three day weekend off can be arranged. Opportunities to assist at the Homer Farmers Market are built in, as well as touring and helping at other area organic farms for learning experiences.
