General Description: Cripple Creek Organics is a small, certified-organic, diversified farm. The planted area is just under one acre. Another acre is being cleared at this time. Vegetables are grown for a farm stand, a restaurant, another farmer's CSA, and sales directly from the farm. Cow's milk is marketed through a Herd-share program. Two cows are being machine milked in the summer of 2017. The farm is located approximately ten miles west of Fairbanks, in the interior of Alaska.
Internship Starts: 5-15-2017
Internship Ends: 8-7-2017
Number of Interns: 1
App Deadline: 6-15-2017
Minimum Length of Stay: 1 month
Meals: Vegetable and milk are a perk. But otherwise on your own.
Skills Desired: In order of importance: detail-oriented, milking and/or handling of farm animals, love of the outdoors. I would stress experience with milking, particularly because of the week this person will need to be solely responsible for the cows (when I have to travel for memorial service mentioned in the Description). Experience could be having been raised or having worked on a farm. The more time spend outside, the better. Although this is a beautiful place, we have increasingly difficult weather and mosquitoes (which can be quite bad depending on the rainfall).
Educational Opportunities: Organic vegetable production: weed management, harvest, sales via a stand-alone farm stand. Dairy production: machine milking two cows, milk-handling practices, management of a herd-share program. Compost production. And an opportunity to live in Fairbanks during the midnight sun.
Stipend: $10/hour for 30 to 40 hours a week. Housing included. Please contact me for further details.
Housing: Vintage and rustic. We have a 1972 Silver Steak trailer with outhouse. The outhouse is actually a 2016. How nice. The trailer does not have running water. Previous farm hands have done their dishes in our house. There is a sink and laundry in our basement. You are welcome to use our shower and WIFI.
Preferred method Of Contact: email
Internship Details: Due to a death in the family, I have changed my strategy for hiring this season. I was previously planning to draw on local part-time help. (In 2016, I did hire full time via an ATTRA listing.) Now I am faced with a trip for a memorial service in late July or early August. I am looking for someone who is interested in diversified and organic farming. The person would have an opportunity to learn a great deal, including milking and the day-to-day care of a few cows to all aspects of vegetable production, particularly harvest and sales. The most valuable aspect of this position might be to see how all these moving parts fit together.
