General Description: We are nurturing a small, family-run herb garden/farmlet in rural, northern central, Alabama. We grow culinary and medicinal herbs, flowers, shiitake mushrooms, and raise ducks. We grow veggies & fruits for ourselves. Room and board in our home is in exchange for 25 hours a week of work time. Possibility of outside paid work, in the county. We are both graduates of permaculture design courses and one of us is a graduate of EAT '06. We also run a solar (PV & Hot water) and energy efficiency business. Opportunity to learn about solar applications and participate in our Intentional Community. Must have own transportation, health insurance, and be comfortable and loving with children & dogs. We are LBGTQA friendly.

Internship Starts: Negotiable.
Internship Ends: Negotiable.
Number of Interns: 6
App Deadline: 2012 for full seaon 2013 internship and any time for short-term.
Minimum Length of Stay: Full season internship is minimum 9 months, Short term is minimum 2 weeks.

Meals: Board included from vegan to clean-food omnivore. Expect to share in prep and clean-up duties.

Skills Desired: Some gardening or farming experience is good, but not required. Just bring your desire to learn about growing, harvesting, and processing food & herbs. Permaculture exposure is a plus. Good opportunity for newbies. We are learners too! We expect you to be a person of high integrity. Your positive attitude and happy personality are expected.

Educational Opportunities: Didactic and hands on. On-site library to support what you are learning. Herbal product making. Tours of other nearby farms, with opportunities to "farm yourself out" (for additional exposure to other methods), as time permits. Regional and state sustainable agriculture groups. Intentional Community work and business meetings. Local "Gardeners and Trade Day". Local river saver group. Peace & Justice group. Yoga classes. Quaker meeting nearby.

Stipend: None is provided. We are scraping by, but if you want to talk about sharing a project and the profits for a whole season, we are open to ideas.

Housing: A room in solar basement with lots of windows!, wood stove and fans. Double bed, wireless web. Shared bath and shower. Dragonfly Herb Farm is located in Common Ground Community, a 38 year old co-operative intentional community on 8O acres of beautiful rural north-Alabama, with a 3-acre cold-spring-fed pond (think swimming, boating), creative hand-crafted homes and beautiful hiking to the local river. Other community and extended tribe close by. Birmingham 1 hour south / Huntsville 1 hour north.

Internship Details: Looking for one person or a couple for full season. Others welcome as space permits. Contribute 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. 2 days off. Readings to support farming actions. Duties: starting seedlings, planting out, weeding & cultivating, mulching and cover cropping, watering, harvesting, processing, making herbal items and packing. Caring for ducks and geese, assorted construction projects, assorted permaculture projects. Other duties as arise. Application required. We do a thorough reference check
