General Description: Located 25 minutes north of Asheville, Ivy Creek Family Farm is nestled in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. We are an established family farm and grow a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, shiitake mushrooms, and flowers for our CSA members, two markets, restaurants, and distributors. We utilize crop rotation, cover cropping and other organic methods to produce high quality, seasonal produce. Apprentices are the heart of our farm and by the end of the season run many aspects of the our farm on their own. When appropriate, we ask apprentices to select a specialty interest, such as mushroom production, plant propagation, or flower cultivation to lead. We strive to select a team of individuals who work and live well together.

Internship Starts: January-March, 2019
Internship Ends: October-December. We also offer opportunities for multi-year employment.

Minimum Length of Stay: 3 months for interns, 6 months for apprentices, 10 months for farm crew leader and field manager

Meals: We provide a stipend for lunch Monday-Friday as well as staples like beans and rice and vegetables from the farm. Crew members take turns making everyone lunch with ingredients they purchase with the stipend and farm veggies. Apprentices have access to vegetable seconds from the farm for personal cooking use.

Skills Desired: We ask that all applicants be interested in production farming, have the ability to work consistently on repetitive tasks, be in good physical and mental shape, enjoy physical labor, and have a positive attitude. Love of food and cooking is a huge plus. We hope that all apprentices will be able to have fun and stay focused while working hard. Successful applicants will enjoy working outdoors in all elements (from pouring rain to the hot sun) and will have the ability to take direction and suggestions with grace, show initiative, and work well in a team.

Educational Opportunities: We train our crew extensively in completing projects and activities both through guided instruction and side-by-side work. We take weekly farm walks with apprentices and also offer periodic classes on subjects that interest the current team of apprentices. Past classes have included shiitake management, irrigation operation, cover cropping, changing the oil in vehicles, business management, field planning, crop variety selection, and more. Ivy Creek Family Farm and our apprentices and interns participate in CRAFT and have the opportunity to visit many other area farms, get to know other farm apprentices, and learn through the CRAFT workshop series. We host events and workshops at Ivy Creek in our pavilion and farm apprentices have the opportunity to see Ivy Creek's agritourism ventures which include weddings, square dances, yoga classes, and farm field trips.

Stipend: Apprentices: $500-$650/month dependent on experience. Private room in our apprentice house and food from the farm plus lunches; raises and bonuses throughout the season, weekly yoga classes, one week paid vacation, and end of season bonuses when at all possible. Apprentices returning for a second season have the opportunity to continue working during the winter months and receive a stipend increase for the second year on the farm. Crew Leader: $700-$850/month dependent on experience.Private room in our apprentice house and food from the farm plus lunches; bonuses throughout the season when possible, weekly yoga classes, one week paid vacation, and end of season bonuses when at all possible.

Housing: Our staff shares a recently renovated 6-bedroom barn apartment. All apprentices have a private room. The kitchen, living room and bathroom are all shared spaces. We ask that applicants be able to live successfully with a group of people and maintain a shared space with cleanliness and courtesy.

Internship Details: APPRENTICESHIPS: In 2019, we have openings for one crew leader and two apprentices who will work closely with our field manager and the farm owners. Our full season apprentices are community members and aspiring organic farmers who work five days a week in the field with weekend market responsibilities and rotating weekend farm chores (like attending market, harvesting shiitakes, and watering the prop house). They live in a renovated barn apartment on the farm which includes private bedrooms, a dining area and full kitchen. Compensation for apprentices includes housing, lunch stipends on work days, veggies, and a $550-$650 a month stipend, depending on experience. We hope that apprentices will start working sometime between February 1st and April 1st. We typically ask that apprentices take on leadership roles and have previous experience working physically and/or farming or gardening. Tasks on the farm are high-paced, long and often tedious. We ask that all applicants be deeply interested in farming, have the ability to work consistently on repetitive tasks, be in good physical and mental shape, and enjoy physical labor. Our goal is to provide apprentices with the experience and knowledge they need to start their own farming operation. Crew Leader: The Ivy Creek Crew Leader works alongside the apprentices. He/she has a leadership role on the farm and organizes work goals, delegates, sets pace, and leads work through his/her own example of excellence and dedication. We ask that applicants for the crew leader position have a minimum of two full seasons of experience working on a vegetable farm. Compensation for the crew leader is $700-$850/month depending on experience. PART TIME EMPLOYMENT: In 2019, Ivy Creek Family Farm also has part-time employment opportunities for 8-10 hours a week on our farm. This position does not include housing, but is paid hourly and include vegetables. We are specifically looking for individuals who can help us in the field on harvest days and at market on Saturdays.
