General Description: Heeks Farm is on 75 acres in Bahama in northern Durham County. We grow ornamental grasses, vegetables and other crops. We sell at area farmer's markets, to restaurants and to our CSA members.

Internship Starts: August 1, 2018
Internship Ends: March 2019, 2018
Number of Interns: 1
App Deadline: Until filled
Minimum Length of Stay: full term

Meals: I will have tea, coffee, gatorade, ramen noodles, microwave popcorn, sauces, etc available for breaks.

Skills Desired: One year of experience is required. You should be familiar with most aspects of working on a small market farm. It is important that you approach the work with a sense of urgency and attention to detail. Critical thinking is also important. You should be in good physical condition and be able to do the following tasks on a regular basis: lift and carry 40-50 lb produce boxes, walk small steps at a time and bend over repeatedly, work on knees, stand in one place for several hours, drive, multiply and add.

Educational Opportunities: I have some old magazines and books which I will make available if you are interested. You probably have google which is amazing. You can ask me questions to better understand my farm operation, but I'm still learning a lot. There are a lot of regional educational opportunities available, from the annual CFSA conference to frequent on-farm workshops organized by cooperative extension staff to classes at a area community college.

Stipend: Pay will be an hourly wage starting at $12. More if you're good at the job.

Housing: No housing is available. I live just southwest of downtown Durham (near the Lakewood YMCA). I commute to the farm in northern Durham county (about a 30 minute drive). We could carpool some days from Durham if that interests you. We can you help you find housing if that is necessary.

Preferred method Of Contact: Please contact me initially by emailing me a resume. I will then send you a questionnaire to fill out and send back before scheduling a phone interview.

Internship Details: This is an hourly wage position on a farm. Most work takes place outside or in an unconditioned barn/packhouse during all kinds of weather. Amenities are rustic. There are hammocks for breaktime, a wood stove for heat, a pond or a fan for cooling off, a microwave, a port-o-john, a use-yer-foot sink, well water and electricity. You will be involved in most aspects of the farm operation including seeding in greenhouse, planting, weeding, harvesting and marketing.
