General Description: We are located on Lopez Island in the Northwest corner of Washington State. Our farming operation is focused on livestock with sheep, swine and poultry as the primary meat products. There is also a mixed vegetable operation and some orchard fruit grown for sale and feed crops grown for the animals. All of our products are direct marketed through sales to customer buying groups, restaurants, local grocery stores a small CSA for vegetables and farmers markets.

Meals: Varies, depending on host housing and host farm.

Skills Desired: Experience with farm animal care desired but not required. Most important attributes are a desire to learn about farming, willingness to work and ability to get along with your fellow workers and customers.

Educational Opportunities: Our interns will be working both alongside us, and independently. Our intentions are to teach skills necessary in independent, small scale, ecologically based farming. Interns will have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of pasture based livestock production from breeding through selling of meat products. Rotational grazing of sheep, pasture pork production and free range chickens are all part of the seasons activities. Planning and executing a mixed vegetable growing operation complete with harvest and sales will be part of the experience.

Housing: Provided off farm as a room with a host family, or more rustic accommodation, such as a tent, on site of a host family.

Internship Details: Interns will work with one or both of the farm owners a minimum of 4 days per week plus one day working for the host family. You will be involved in all aspects of the farming operation from working with livestock, processing chickens, planting and harvesting crops to farmer’s market sales. Some of the work is hard labor and interns must be in good physical shape.
