General Description: Foxtail Farm CSA Apprenticeship Foxtail Farm is looking for two people who are interested in working on a diversified vegetable farm that markets though a Winter CSA. We prefer a couple or 2 individuals who are committed to sustainable farming and want to explore growing year round in the upper mid-west. Apprentices help grow the vegetables we use for our 250 member Winter CSA as well as work in our licensed processing kitchen, root cellars, and delivering CSA boxes. We have successfully graduated many new farmers (available as references) and incubator opportunities are available for the right folks depending on skill level and interest. Apprentices learn all practical aspects of our farming operation including greenhouse/hoophouse operation and management, tillage, planting, cultivating, harvesting, packing, root cellaring and processing. We also have discussions concerning cover crops, fertility and soil health, finances etc. Compensation includes $8/hour, proceeds from our established farmer's market, farm produce, great housing, and opportunity to use our infrastructure, land and assistance to start your farming career. If the apprenticeship continues for a second year (our preference) there is access to additional land, markets and income potential under your own farm name. Opportunities may also exist for small animal operations, or value added kitchen ventures. Qualifications: Most important are enthusiasm for farming, a positive attitude and a willingness to work and learn. Successful applicants will have at least one year of production farm experience and a solid work history with excellent references. Being in good physical condition is important as is being fast and efficient. What to Expect: You can expect to work hard and learn a lot about this type of farming. The work we do is physically and mentally challenging. On our part, we will share our knowledge and the resources of the farm so that you can be successful in your future farming endeavors.
