General Description: Our 40-acre farm is located in western WI, about an hour from the Twin Cities of MN. Most of our farm is in pasture, on which we rotationally graze our flock of several hundred sheep, depending on the season. We also grow about 2 acres of vegetables, which we market through a small farmers' coop and at a local farmers' market. We also have a few laying hens for us, a large kitchen garden, and are slowing working on putting in perennials like apple trees. We are headed into our fourth season farming together, our third season on this land. We love this area- the community of small farmers around us, the land, and the swimming hole right down the road!

Meals: We share our kitchen and many meals with the crew. We cook and eat lunch together, rotating who cooks for everyone. Breakfast, dinner and snacks are on your own, and there are small kitchenettes provided for employees living on site. We are always open to sharing our kitchen with you to cook a larger meal, do some canning, or have company, given some notice. We provide grocery staples for common meals and strive to eat mostly from the farm, so treats, packaged foods, and luxury items are at your own expense/discretion.
Both having been vegetarian in the past, we are familiar with meatless cooking, but now use animal products regularly. We want to be able to share our kitchen and the abundance of our farm in full with our interns, so some degree of flexibility about eating animal products is probably required.
Skills Desired: For the full-time position, we are looking for at least two years of farming experience, a strong desire to work and common sense. Part-time positions do not require farm experience, although it is helpful. We find our work enjoyable and fulfilling, but hours are long and tasks can often be tedious, so a good attitude is a must. You must but able to work outdoors in all types of weather, lift moderately heavy loads, and walk a lot. You also need to be able to get along respectfully with us and your fellow workers- we will be working together a lot! A desire to learn new skills is much appreciated, and we are happy to teach new skills whenever possible.
Educational Opportunities: Our farm is a place to learn by doing. While we both love to teach and explain, we are not offering farm school. We are offering employment through which you can learn a lot if you are motivated and interested. We are still learning, too, and working long hours together will give us the opportunity to have many conversations and learn from each other.
Stipend: Pay for the full-time position starts at $11/hr. With an average of 45 hours/week, and expenses taken out for housing and one meal per day (lunch), you can expect to take home about $1600/month.
Pay for part-time workers starts at $8/hr. We are somewhat flexible on schedule, but are looking for folks 15-20 hours/week.
Housing: We have several small on-farm residences (RV/camper) available for employees. Each of these spaces is equipped with a kitchenette for preparing your own breakfast and dinner, and with basic bathroom facilities. They do not, however, have hot water, so the shower in the farmhouse is available at your discretion. You will have use of our shared kitchen for lunch, pantry, laundry room.

Internship Details: If you're looking for a small, diversified farm where you can work and grow in 2018, we may be your people. We are hiring for one full-time manager position, who will predominantly be a vegetable manager, but will also help with some of the sheep tasks. We are also hiring for two to three part-time positions to help exclusively in the vegetable field. Tasks and responsibilities will include planting, weeding, cultivating, harvesting, operating tractors, washing and packing produce, mowing, brush clearing, small building projects, etc. We work Monday-Friday, and our day starts at 7:30, with a brief morning break, lunch together, and wrapping up at 5:30. We have a three and a half year old and a new baby! We like them a lot, but if you are strongly opposed to children we may not be the farm for you.
