Position Description:
Interns are involved with all aspects of farm operations. Interns will work alongside farmer and team members and occasionally on solo tasks. Tasks will include soil fertility, soil/bed preparation, seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, processing vegetables, marketing, coordinating sales, distribution of product, working directly with chefs/restaurant owners/clients, integrated pest management, season extension methods, setting up/operating various irrigation methods. You will learn how to use farm equipment/tools, build necessary infrastructure, and food handling/safety. You will be involved with all crop planning and farm decision making with the intention to prepare you to become a farm manager/farm owner after time spent with us....

Thorn Chase is highly diverse and offers numerous educational and research opportunities. Interns must engage in all areas of our operation. We utilize a learn-by-doing model of instruction along with teaching others to reinforce skills. Research projects are supervised with access to top scientists and researchers.

"An intern at Greenbrier Farms will experience a truly sustainable, symbiotic, diverse family farm and will acquire knowledge in organic gardening, pasture based animal systems, CSA management, event management and marketing. "

"Interns will work, on average, 50-60 hours per week. Daily chores include plant bed preparation, planting, cultivating, harvesting. Interns are expected to work the Farmers Market on Saturdays in April-October as well as make deliveries to local restaurants. "

"The Farm Apprentice will be responsible for assisting the Farm Director lead daily operations on the farm and training youth in basic farm operations. The Farm Apprentice will be expected to ensure that tasks are completed with excellence. The Farm Apprentice will have 2-3 weeks of training prior to the start of summer program. In addition, the Farm Apprentice will receive daily guidance from Farm Director and weekly feedback as a group. The Farm Apprentice will be expected to communicate daily with Farm Director and Youth Crew Leaders."
