Montana Beef to School
FoodCorps Montana service members have worked to source local beef in school lunches in order to invest money in the local economy and feed our children healthier meals.
FoodCorps is a national non-profit organization that places emerging leaders in communities across the nation to connect kids to real food and help them grow up healthy. We do this by placing these leaders in limited-resource communities for a year of public service where they conduct hands-on food education, build and tend school gardens, and facilitate getting high-quality local food into public school cafeterias.
Every community and state brings unique opportunities and challenges.
In Montana, cows outnumber people by about three to one. FoodCorps service members have worked to get local beef on school lunch menus. By connecting ranchers, processors, distributors, government officials, teachers, parents, students and food service directors we’ve instigated a rich dialogue about supporting local agriculture, building a healthier food system and reinvigorating the agricultural identity of the state.
