NMPAN Offers Updated Guide to State Poultry Processing Regulations
The Niche Meat Processor Assistance Network has introduced a Guide to State Poultry Processing Regulations that provides a summary of state laws and regulations related to poultry processing, links to useful state-specific resources, and contact information for the relevant agencies.

Lawsuit Filed Challenging Genetically Modified Seed Patents
On behalf of 60 family farmers, seed businesses and organic agricultural organizations, the Public Patent Foundation filed suit March 29 against Monsanto Company to challenge patents on genetically modified seed.
National Sustainable Agriculture Standards Committee Announces New Appointments
This week Leonardo Academy announced the appointment of six new members to the National Sustainable Agriculture Standards Committee, in the Producer and General Interest categories. In addition to applying for Standards Committee membership, stakeholders are also invited to participate in the Sustainable Agriculture Standard development process as a subcommittee member, observer or reviewer of the draft standard once it is opened up for public comment.
National Organic Standards Board to Meet April 26-29
On April 26-29, 2011, the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) will convene in Seattle to receive input from the organic community and finalize its recommendations to the Secretary of Agriculture.
Arkansas Rice Producers Awarded $136.8 Million in Genetically Modified Rice Lawsuit
An Arkansas jury recently awarded Riceland Foods Inc. $136.8 million in its lawsuit against Bayer CropScience over genetically modified rice, stemming from August 2006, when Bayer's experimental Liberty Link rice was found in the U.S. supply of long-grain rice.
Cover Crop Decision Tool Available Online
The Midwest Cover Crop Council has released the Cover Crop Decision Tool,
a web-based system to assist farmers in selecting cover crops to include
in row crop rotations. The current version, for Indiana, Michigan and
Ohio, identifies appropriate cover crops by attribute at the county level.

Organic Farming Research Foundation Education and Outreach Grants Program
The Organic Farming Research Foundation is offering up to $15,000 to fund the development of educational opportunities and materials that are: pertinent to organic agricultural production or marketing; and aimed at organic producers and/or those considering making the transition to organic certification.
Proposals must be submitted by May 16, 2011.
Biorefinery Assistance Program
USDA's Biorefinery Assistance Program provides loan guarantees to develop and construct commercial-scale biorefineries or to retrofit existing facilities. Details on how to apply are available in the March 11, 2011 Federal Register, page 13351.
Applications must be received by May 10, 2011.
Kansas Specialty Crop Grants
The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) is accepting applications for the 2011 Specialty Crop Block Grant program to promote the competitiveness of specialty crops.
Applications are due to KDA no later than May 27, 2011.
