Project Focuses on Improving Soil Care in Organic Vegetable Production

Eight organic vegetable growers in California are working with researchers at Chico State, Fresno State, and UC Agriculture and Natural Resources on a project that seeks to improve soil care in organic production systems. At a November field day, farmer Phil Foster shared methods that he and his staff have developed for promoting soil health during 30 years in the business. Foster discussed strategies that optimize cover crop benefits and water usage, and demonstrated cover crop rolling that minimizes tillage. UCANR reports that “[o]ver the project’s three-year term, the farmers and researchers will continue to experiment with soil-building techniques and share results.”
