Project to Develop Phenological Calendar for Planting

Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center’s farm has been awarded a Minnesota Department of Agriculture Sustainable Agriculture Demonstration Grant to develop an agro-phenological calendar for northeast Minnesota, reports Lake County News Chronicle. Wolf Ridge Farm will use more than 30 years of production data from Round River Farm in creating a planting calendar for farmers that links planting dates for specific crops with natural indicators. Wolf Ridge Farm manager David Abazs says the calendar will help the region’s farmers better deal with a changing climate. Results of the project will be shared through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Greenbook, as were the results of a grant project last year that studied soil amendment alternatives. That project identified a biochar and ash soil amendment as an effective way to raise soil pH.
