In addition to the five apprentices, we also have two co-farmers, Holly and Andy, as well as farm manager, Ben and the farm’s Biodynamic Mentor, M. Additionally, as housing and accommodations allow, the farm also hosts wwoofers from time to time. And finally, the farm typically engages two or three part time interns for the season.

Apprenticeships/Internships generally involve learning by doing. In the process of doing the work of the farm, crew members will have the opportunity to gain experience in planting techniques, soil fertility, weed control, pest management, irrigation, harvesting, marketing, equipment use/maintenance, record keeping, Biodynamic preparations and livestock management. Some tasks may seem redundant or monotonous, so it’s very important for interns to be able to maintain a positive attitude. We work in all types of weather conditions, so come prepared with a variety of appropriate attire. A list of recommended items to bring to the farm will be provided once a season commitment has been made.

It is important to understand, that apprentices will be working side-by-side with the farmers a lot of the time, especially in the beginning of the season. But as the season progresses, the farmers have tasks around the farm that are their responsibility alone. This leaves some of the time when the crew works independently. First year apprentices must be able to take direction and guidance from returning apprentices.

In order to share knowledge and responsibilities among all apprentices and interns, as well as to allow apprentices to dive deeper into areas of interest, we organize our farm crew into teams. Team members work together and observe, discuss, advocate for their area of interest, and then implement work which enhances it. Full team descriptions are available upon request, but include production, harvest, Biodynamic/compost, livestock, greenhouse, market and community teams. All crew members will continue to learn about all of the aspects of the farm, but we’ve observed that having areas of focus empowers apprentices to become adept and skilled in one area of farm work.
It is essential for perspective apprentices and interns to understand that farm work is very physical, with workdays spanning from 7:30am to 5:30pm (with an hour off for lunch) during the height of the season. We also typically work 8am to 1:30/2pm on Saturdays. The exact time commitment will vary through the season at 50-55 hours per week. The beginning of the season is very busy and as the summer progresses there is a steadier rhythm that sets in. We do our best to vary the tasks throughout the day, in order to prevent too much time being spent on one job; however, farm work is often repetitive by nature and very physically demanding. It is vital to have good self-care skills and healthy lifestyle habits. For apprentices who would like to live on the farm, we expect a commitment for the entire season, but we have some flexibility to accommodate alternative schedules.

Full time apprentices will rotate through having Saturdays off from farm work. On any given Saturday, two apprentices will be offered a Saturday off. This will allow apprentices to have approximately every third or fourth Saturday off from farm work (depending on the number of full time apprentices). Also, for full time apprentices, the farm will offer a paid week (7days) off during the months of June or July, without a change in the apprentice’s monthly stipend. However, if apprentices need additional time for family emergencies or other personal situations that arise, the farm will do its best to accommodate, but the time away will most likely result in a reduction in the monthly stipend (but only for the month when the time was missed).

We also have a rotating Sunday chore schedule for full time apprentices. These chores will include opening and closing tunnels, livestock chores and watering seedlings/fresh transplants. Full time apprentices will rotate through Sunday chores every third or fourth Sunday and will be paired with either an experienced crew member or farmer. The time commitment for Sunday will vary as the chore list varies, but expect a 2-3-hour time commitment, at a leisurely Sunday-style pace.

{"Start Date":"february-march","End Date":"october-november","Application Deadline":"until filled
In 2021, Ivy Creek Family Farm seeks two assistant farmers and one lead farmer. During work hours, in-field demonstrations and discussions for each new task ensure that apprentices understand the goals, strategies, factors, and potential challenges of each farm activity. Having everyone on the farm feel confident and adept in accomplishing each farm task efficiently and successfully is very important. We also take weekly farm walks where we take the time to observe the changes happening in the fields, assess the needs of the farm and discuss our plan for the week. You will be growing a very wide diversity of vegetables and flowers, so the work is varied and there is always more to learn!

The heart of the farm is a member-harvested CSA. In 2020 we had over 100 families visit the farm weekly during CSA season to harvest their own share of farm goodness. The joy of watching children and grandparents pick cherry tomatoes from the hoophouses together, or of watching the exhausted, working parent cutting her own flower bouquet to cheer her kitchen-- this is what keeps us inspired and enthusiastic about our farm work. You will grow the food that feeds these families, and you will be there to witness their joy in eating from the fields you have created and nurtured.

You will also be in charge of harvesting and packing our produce and flowers for the farm’s other market streams. Our top three crops sold in the community are tomatoes, garlic, and flowers, but in a typical week we’ll harvest and pack smaller amounts of 15 different, give or take, to go out to the community via the Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market, Argus Farm Stop (a retail grocer in the city), and the Washtenaw Organic Collaborative (a local farm cooperative). You’ll share responsibility with the farm manager to make our farmer’s market stalls hum; we attend on Saturdays and Wednesdays in downtown Ann Arbor, which is a 10-12 minute drive from the farm.

An important piece of being a good fit for this model of farming is to really love people. During peak season, our farm hosts folks-- CSA members or Workshare crew-- in our fields three days a week and we also attend a busy, high energy farmers market on two days. There are certainly moments of quiet, solitary seeding or harvesting on our farm. But in general, our model involves a lot of conversation, relationship building, and co-working and it’s important to know that up front to see if this is a good match for your needs and desires.

You will leave this eight-month position in the fall knowing how to run an economically sustainable vegetable and flower farm. We have only been farming since 2017, so our farm is a place of constant learning. Our core farm systems work well and are sustainable, but there are so many different crops that there is room to constantly experiment, be flexible, and learn new methods. We are proud that so many of our past farm apprentices currently have successful farming careers. Over the past ten years, between 2010 and 2019, 32 farm apprentices graduated from our program and 21 of them (66%) farmed during the 2020 growing season (or were in farm-related degree programs), and 14 of them (44%) were farm owners or farm managers.
We seek to train an inclusive next generation of farmers. Nationwide, 95% of farmers are white, 85% of farmers are men, and the average age of a farmer is 60-years-old, Many other groups are underrepresented. This apprenticeship program seeks to decrease these disparities in representation caused by systems supporting white supremacy, colonialism, racism, capitalism and sexism. Therefore, we encourage Black, Indigenous, and people of color, women, LGBTQ2SIA people, religious minorities, recent migrants/refugees, people with disabilities who can meet the responsibilities and qualifications, and people from different generational and economic backgrounds to apply. This farm apprenticeship program is designed for people with little or no experience farming. Farm apprentices spend much of their time being closely mentored by our two farm co-managers. Bryan and David. Both are white cis-men; one is gay and the other bisexual. They are constantly considering how their positionality and privilege may impact the apprentices’ experience. Overall, Zenger Farm is a multi-racial space, and we are deeply engaged in conversations around issues of identity and belonging.
We seek to model an economically-viable alternative to “conventional agriculture.” We adopt a view of food justice. Farms should be responsible and accountable members of their communities. Farms should improve community resilience and self-reliance. Farms should foster connections with the land. We seek to reform conventional farming practices that depend heavily on machinery, chemicals and exploited labor. Conventional agriculture damages land, air and water; harms the health of communities that consume the food grown; and harms the workers who feed our communities.
Farm Apprentices care for four acres of diversified vegetable crops and fruit orchards. Zenger Farm is certified organic. We grow over 150 varieties of vegetables on just over two acres where we spend the vast majority of our time. We also care for young orchards which are not producing fruit yet.
We seek to operate a farm that models social justice and economic viability. We earned $125,000 from the distribution of produce in 2020. 80% of our produce went to our CSA, with 120 shares picked up by members at the farm and 60 shares picked up by patients at the nearby Multnomah County Mid County Health Center (which operates as a bilingual English/Spanish pick-up site). Another 10% of our produce went to local food justice nonprofits and the final 10% of our produce was sold to local restaurants. Our farming operation allows us to model innovative practices. In one such program, we educated over 500 other CSA farmers how to accept SNAP payment. We have since set up a system to provide centralized SNAP processing for over 50 Oregon CSA farms. In another such program, for-profit CSA farms are paired with low-income health clinics providing subsidized shares to patients with diet-related illnesses, called CSA Partnerships for Health.
The core of the Zenger Farm Crew consists of two experienced farm co-managers and four full-season farm apprentices. Four short-season interns will join the crew 2 days/week for 8 weeks in the Summer and again in the Fall. Farm apprentices spend much of their time closely mentored by our two farm co-managers. Similarly, farm apprentices will work closely with, mentor and teach the farm interns. Additionally, farm apprentices will lead volunteers and other work parties.
Education of the body is the core component of this apprenticeship. We teach apprentices the underlying ergonomics of farm work. Proper ergonomics are essential for an economically-viable farm. Your speed, stamina and efficiency will allow you to operate your own farm and compete when other farms lower their costs with machinery, chemicals, and exploited labor.
We provide an immersive and comprehensive education in farming. Farm apprentices will have direct experience in all aspects of our farming operation, taking turns being responsible for every aspect. The farm apprenticeship includes over 40 hours of classroom instruction in topics such as crop planning, irrigation, seed saving, soil fertility, enterprise budgeting, etc. Farm apprentices will be provided additional opportunities to attend classes and tours at other local farms. While apprentices will occasionally participate in other programming at Zenger Farm (youth education and community engagement), the vast majority of their time is spent farming.
We seek to provide a compassionate education. Zenger Farm recognizes that many people, disproportionately Black, Indigenous and Latinx folks, have historical and current traumas related to land access and agricultural work. We also recognize that training future farmers to operate an economically-viable farm focused on production within a capitalist system hinders our ability to create a healing environment to address that trauma. While recognizing our current limitations, we strive to create as much of a supportive environment as possible through mindfulness, shared responsibility, use of Nonviolent Communication, regular check-ins, open feedback (both given and received), and Popular Education methods. Together, we examine the root causes of injustice in our food system with facilitated discussions prompted by readings, talks, videos and personal stories shared by the apprentices, as well as visits with other community members and leaders.

{"Start Date":"March 15, 2021","End Date":"October 28, 2021","Application Deadline":"January 17, 2021
Before applying, please visit our website to read our Apprenticeship Handbook and COVID-19 guidelines. Applicants for this position should be interested in learning farm management and taking on more responsibilities as the season progresses, including helping teach the beginning apprentice. Their hours and tasks will strongly mirror the work of the Garden Manager/Associate.
--A Beginning Apprentice who is looking to start a career in agriculture. Previous experience on a farm is not necessary, but applicants must demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in our food system and a strong understanding of the physical nature of farming and the time commitment it requires.

Apprenticeship Terms and Time Commitments:
--Advanced Apprentice: Early March (flexible, but ideally no later than March 15) through October 31; average 40 hours per week. We’re discussing extending this position through February 2021.
--Beginning Apprentice: flexible start date in April or May (could be later for the right candidate), through September 30, with the possibility of staying into October as work and interest allows; average 35 to 40 hours per week

Apprentices will be included in all aspects of farm management in order to fully understand the flexibility, forethought, and stamina a full season requires. They will work every third weekend covering basic duties like watering and opening and closing greenhouses. Additionally:
--Field Work - mostly hand powered, but we occasionally use a walk-behind tiller
--Propagation, Direct Seeding, Transplanting, and Irrigation
--Harvesting, Washing, Packing - estimating and communicating with the Produce Manager
--Record Keeping - planting, labor, materials, harvest totals
--Farm Maintenance - weeding, mowing, and keeping a clean workplace
--Plant and Soil Care - pest and disease scouting, soil amending, brewing compost tea, etc.
--Composting - building and turning hot compost piles, feeding worm bins

Apprentices will occasionally work in the food bank and donation center to better understand how our organization functions and to get to know the community. Apprentices can help the Produce Manager with processing projects and stocking the store, if interested. Other aspects of nonprofit management:
--Volunteer Coordination and Recruitment: individuals, service groups, work parties
--Outreach: social media, writing blog posts, connecting with food bank shoppers, site interpretation
--Community Engagement and Events

Work Week and Season:
Apprentices are expected to be present at the start of the work day--between 7:30 and 8:30 am. Farm work this far north has a noticeable seasonal shift. Work will pick up quickly in May and drop off just as quickly in late September following the increase and decrease in light and warmth. Hours per week will follow this same pattern and will be between 7 and 9 hours per day. We will keep a record of hours worked under and over 40 hours per week so the average across the season does not exceed this total.
Every Monday we spend the morning walking around the farm, making observations and taking notes about projects for the week. We will use these notes to plan out tasks and get an idea for what the week will look like. We give the farm walk however much time it needs to help apprentices understand the work, seasons, practices and how these relate to our broader food system (questions are encouraged).
While the day will often end on time, some days will be longer to finish big projects on tight deadlines, and apprentices are expected to stay until work is completed. These projects will be scheduled during our planning sessions so you will have a few days notice that you will have to stay a little later (and we often know they’re coming a week or two ahead of time).
{"Start Date":"3/1/2021","End Date":"10/31/2021","Application Deadline":"Priority deadline: Dec. 8, 2020, but we will continue to accept applicaitons and schedule interviews until the positions are filled.
Part of our farm's goal is to encourage others to join in on the pastured poultry movement. We prioritize creating a community and providing society for each other with weekly potlucks, a trip to the lake, and other group activities based on interests. We love good food, and center many of our gatherings around potluck style feasts. We all live and work together, you co-workers will also be your housemates.

Our apprentices spend considerable time on jobs such as planting, transplanting, pest and weed control, harvesting, packing, and selling our produce at our farmers markets in Washington, D.C. However, their primary role is assisting in management of crops, equipment and marketing. Each spring we sit down as a group to divide up the tasks and crops. Every apprentice manages from one to six of our 30+ crops, and becomes responsible for monitoring the crop's progress in the field, and the harvesting, storage, and marketing of the crop--see these guidelines for crop managers. Each apprentice also takes on other aspects of managing the farm, such as a managing the greenhouse, running a weekly market and/or monitoring irrigation. We believe in learning by doing, but there are built-in systems and oversight to make sure that everything is running as smoothly as possible. Besides on-the-job training, we take time for discussions and seminars on topics of interest to apprentices. Our crew normally makes several visits to other nearby farms for learning purposes.

We expect apprentices to learn our systems while constantly practicing excellent communication, keeping a great pace, and exercising time management for yourself and others. I'm confident the right person could turn this farm into much more than I have established over the last nine years. Since I have taken a full time off-farm job, a person with substantial skills and experience who is seeking an autonomous farm management experience would be perfect. There's a lot of potential for TNT and southwest Virginia. I have seen increased demand for fresh farm products here over the last several years and the growth of this little farm is limited only by the physical and mental ability of the people who work this land. By managing the infrastructure, resources, established processes and procedures of TNT while maintaining the product line and customer base a person could test the waters of owning their own operation. Think of it as an incubation of your own operation supported by infrastructure, operational processes and resources, and a great community.
{"Start Date":"March 2021 for interns. Not only does this program deeply immerse a person into the daily rhythms of life on a diversified farm and in the care of its ecosystem, but it also invites participants into a community whose life carries purpose and meaning beyond the confines of the farm itself. Participating in this age-old and ever-critical human work of growing food and caring for the land will open you to pathways of life and wholeness within yourself and the world around you, enriching you in ways that will serve you on whatever journey that lies ahead. Changing the world, amidst the ever complexifying crises of climate change, economic injustice, food justice, and more, begins with remembering and living into who we truly are as humans: members and caretakers of this rich web of abundant, God-given life in Creation. If we learn together how to lovingly nurture the life all around us, growing wholesome food from the soil under our feet and with the animals that enrich it and us, we will not only bless ourselves, our families, and our local community with live-giving food, but will be contributing to the preservation of this world for generations to come. So, we invite you to come, learn, grow, and be transformed with us as an intern at Third Way Farm!

Whether you are considering sustainable agriculture as a vocation or way of life, or are interested in organic farming and just want to have an experience living it for a season, this internship program is for you!

The Dirt on the Internship:
What does the internship include?
• Farming! 50-55 hours per week of all things agriculture
• Housing - live in our eco-sustainable intern house!
• Food from the Farm - vegetables, herbs, eggs, pork
• Stipend - Minimum $850/month
• Farm Project Option - get funding and help to start your own farm project to create a product to sell or a system that improves the life of the farm; a great way to earn extra income and deepen your experience!

How long is it?
That depends. The farm needs interns year-round, and so we give preference to those willing to commit to at least 9-12 months. But, we also accept interns for shorter periods of 5-6 months, as well as strictly summer internships for 2-3 months.

What does it look like to be an intern?
At its heart, this is a sustainable farming internship program. The main aspects of work for interns will focus on our intensive organic vegetable, herb, and micro-greens production, and will also entail significant involvement in our rotational, pasture and woodland-based livestock systems. Interns will, throughout the season, partake in all tasks pertaining to the operation and life of this farm. A sampling of some major elements of this work include: sowing seeds, planting, harvesting, processing vegetables, bed/soil prep, livestock chores and pasture rotation, weeding, washing, deliveries and running farmers’ markets. By the end of the season, this internship will educate and equip you with all aspects of operating a diversified, regenerative farm. At the same time, it is our hope and goal for you to come away (or further into) this experience having "grown" holistically as a person.
A high level of responsibility, care and excellence is expected in all aspects and levels of work done here. We expect speed, efficiency, precision, awareness, and adaptability as key characteristics of our interns. At the same time, TWF seeks to cultivate an atmosphere of fellowship and fun in all we do, and we strive hard to make our work environment minimally stressful and maximally enjoyable. Team, faith, and community are essential values that undergird our daily experience at Third Way Farm.
Intern schedules will be set but flexible, typically entailing approximately 50 hours of work per week during our main season from April-October, and less during the winter season. Plenty of space for rest, fun, and self-care, however, is built into that work time. The work week will often include some work on Saturday mornings, and rarely, help with basic chores throughout the weekend. Extra-compensation will be offered for work beyond Monday-Friday and occasional Saturday mornings. 1 week vacation and sick/personal days are given when needed.

{"Start Date":"Rolling Start Date - January - April 2021","End Date":"Flexible end date - August 31 - December 31 2021","Application Deadline":"Rolling application deadline - most positions to be filled by February 2021
A successful farm producing high quality produce for 20 the past 20 years.
