General Farm Description: Join us on the beautiful Central Coast of California for a fully immersive farming experience from livestock to gardening, farm stand and farmers market, and construction mentoring if you're interested! Our farm is located in a beautiful canyon in Lompoc, California, only a few miles from Surf Beach, and the Vandenberg Space Force Base launch pad where NASA and SpaceX launch rockets into space . We specialize in raising chickens, and are known for helping others get started with growing their own food. We build chicken coops and offer poultry supplies for those just starting with chickens. We also operate a local Farm Box Subscription (CSA) Program, run an Honor System Farm Stand, and participate at our local Farmer's Market on Sundays. In addition to chickens, we have Jersey dairy cows and dwarf Nigerian goats for visitors to enjoy.

Internship Details:

The Garden Manager position is a full time job managing our 2 acre garden space. From planning and executing the growing season to fulfilling CSA boxes, managing our farm stand, and directing WWOOF volunteers.

Daily Tasks can Include:

Harvesting, Planting, Weeding, Weed Whacking, Fertilizing, Turning Compost Piles, Delivering or Picking up orders, cleaning and stocking farm stand.

We have a small 23 hp tractor to aid the garden production.  We use drip irrigation, zero herbicides, one organic pesticide when needed, beneficial insects, pollinator gardens, on site produced chicken manure compost, as well organic fertilizer. We are located in one of the best climates in the world. It rarely freezes, and rarely gets above 80F.

Must be self Starting, adaptable to change, have a valid Drivers License, able to lift 50#.

Also helpful: light marketing, people skills, light computer work, organizational skills.


Educational Opportunities: Although gardening experience is a plus, we will teach you the full spectrum of running and managing a small market garden. We have had several garden managers use the skills learned here to start their own market garden. We have been producing quality, wholesome, honest food from this space for over 15 years and we have much to teach, but also always open to learn more. Tractor use and light mechanic work.

Skills Desired: Farming is hard, some days might be longer than others. A positive attitude and willing to learn is always needed. We also live and work together on the farm so communal living skills are a must.

Stipend: Yes, $400 week.
