Internship information
General Farm Description: Blue House Farm is a CCOF-certified organic farm located in Pescadero and San Gregorio, CA. San Diego native and first-generation farmer Ryan Casey became interested in farming while taking agriculture courses in college. After completing an internship with the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) at UC Santa Cruz and working on several farms, he jumped at the chance to launch his own organic operation. In 2005, the Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) awarded Blue House Farm a lease on land in Pescadero. The farm has since grown, working with POST to restore and steward a historic 74-acre ranch in San Gregorio, where we also provide housing for most of our year-round farmworkers. Operation in two different microclimates allows us to grow a wide variety of crops year-round. Cool-weather crops (brassicas, lettuces, strawberries, artichokes) thrive in the fog on the San Gregorio property, while heat-loving crops (tomatoes, summer squash, sweet potatoes) grow at our Pescadero farm, which benefits from much warmer, sunnier days. In addition to our fresh vegetable, fruit, and cut flower crops, we are also enthusiastically growing over 30 varieties of heirloom dry beans. With support from POST, we raised a redwood timber-frame barn on the San Gregorio ranch in 2019. The barn now houses our year-round Farmstand, which provides our local community with the freshest produce around, and is the hub for our seasonal strawberry and pumpkin U-pick programs and other community events.CRAFT Member Farm?
