Bluebird House Farm spans several hundred acres located on 2+ parcels in Central KY. There are approximately 70 acres of total cleared land with the majority of these being located at 802 Dug Hill. This location is the “face” of the farm, capable of hosting agritourism events, and U-pick berry and flower operations. It has the ability to pasture 30 head of cattle for beef production (though we do not currently have cattle), with a spring house and spring-fed pond supplying water for livestock and vegetable production. At this site, there are three barns, there will be one large hoop house and one “washroom” harvest shed with a walk-in refrigerator for produce storage until shipment to market/grocery. The other farm, located in “the holler” is more private and houses the majority of draft animals and equipment full-time, as well as all small livestock for meat production currently (goats, chickens, rabbits, turkey, quail.) The vegetable production of our entire farm is split between both locations. We currently have two full-time and two part-time employees responsible for feeding, watering, farm maintenance, landscaping and helping with different farm projects. We also have one full-time produce manager who coordinates all vegetable and fruit production. Our goal is to open a grocery in Fall of 2025 to sell our farm products alongside regional partner’s products. We value local, high nutritional food grown with permaculture systems and non-certified organic practices.
Our dream is to provide a variety of vegetable and meat options for local consumption while maintaining a healthy diverse environment on our farms. We envision a multi-location robust operation with one overall big-picture order of operations, where each site has organized storage, feed, medical, fencing and tool stations. Everything should be clearly labeled and organized and streamlined across locations with
timelines for projects and livestock groupings at each site. We plan to install permanent perimeter fencing on all properties, with rotational grazing plans mapped out and orchestrated regularly with electric fencing.
We will have a permaculture system of animal cycles for grazing, from large to small (i.e. mules and horses in pasture, then chickens in tractors, or goats on hillside pastures, then turkeys), in order to maximize efficiency and nutrient deposits while minimizing impacts on soil and parasite or bacteria blooms. We believe in spending more time in prevention and planning than mistakes, accidents and/or repairs.
