General Farm Description: The Organic Farm School operates a community-scaled annual vegetable farm on Whidbey Island in the PNW. We serve our local food system by growing a diversity of crops on 4-5 acres and selling the produce at multiple outlets, which provides the foundation for our field training and community education opportunities.CRAFT Member Farm? Internship Details:
The Organic Farm School is seeking 1-2 apprentices to learn and work on site for $16.66/hour over a 40-hour work week. Apprentices will learn how to work on and operate a community-scaled farm by working with the farm manager and field supervisor in a variety of roles in order to understand how to operate a community-scaled farm and leave prepared to start their own incubator farm. Apprentices will work through the full season on tasks that include: propagation, bed prep, fertility management, cultivation, judicious tillage, harvesting/wash-pack, marketing, irrigation, crop planning, basic equipment maintenance, and more. Please note that there is a $1500 dollar fee for business classes, though the apprenticeship is paid.
Educational Opportunities: In-field training, business planning courses, and eight sessions on regenerative farming topics.
Skills Desired: At minimum, we encourage applicants to have completed a degree in Sustainable Agriculture, or an on-line/virtual small farm training program, or have spent a year working on a small scale farm in some capacity.
Meals: No. However, Apprentices are encouraged to harvest food from the field for their meals.
Stipend: Our Apprentices become part of our field team, and are paid WA State minimum wage ($16.66) for a 40 hour work week for the duration of the season. They are hired, and can be fired.
Housing: On site housing is available for $200/month, in small sleeping cabins. Shared bathroom, shower, and kitchen space is nearby on site.
