General Farm Description: Abe’s Acres Farm is a diversified low-till market garden situated on a historic family farm in beautiful Hightstown, NJ. We grow over 30 crops and over 150 different varieties on 4 acres, including a greenhouse, high tunnel, and caterpillar tunnel. We sell through a small CSA and three local farmers markets. Abe’s Acres Farm is seeking an energetic candidate with at least 1 year of experience in vegetable production for the role of assistant field manager.
The assistant field manager will be involved in all aspects of vegetable production on our no-till market garden, and will be responsible for coordinating and supervising field work: leading the crew, operating irrigation, monitoring crop health, teaching new crew members, etc., in cooperation with the owner and managers.
The ideal candidate will be interested in pursuing farming as a career. This position will be highly collaborative with the owner and crew. You will have the opportunity to learn a lot about small-scale vegetable production, but you will also have the opportunity to contribute, critique, brainstorm, and refine processes and methods to make the farming operation more efficient and productive. If you’re interested in getting a real, hands-on experience of managing a market garden, this position will provide that opportunity.

Skills Desired: The Assistant Manager will be involved in all aspects of vegetable production including propagation, field production, high tunnel management, harvesting, washing/packing, marketing, and employee supervision. Skills/responsibilities include: Able to lift 50 pounds and spend extended time bent over and kneeling for harvest Work well with a team and demonstrate strong leadership skills Communicate effectively with crew and with the owner Able to work long hours in all kinds of weather. Able to commit to the full season of March-November, preferably beginning in February to participate in yearly farm planning 1+ years of experience in vegetable production required
Meals: occasionally
Stipend: Expect to work 45-50 hrs per week. $18-25/hr depending on experience. All employees have access to abundant fresh vegetables from the farm.
