General Farm Description: Hogstead is a 16 acre pork, poultry, and vegetable operation located north of Seattle, Washington. The family farm direct markets products through farmer's markets, farm stand, and online sales. Hogstead focuses on sustainability through pasture based management of livestock and vegetable production that utilizes on-farm generated compost. Internship Details:

Seeking one prospective intern to assist the farm’s marketing operations.  Intern would operate 4 farmer’s markets per week.  Additional work includes maintaining the farm’s online store with product offerings online, managing online inventory accurately, writing mailchimp emails to consumers, managing and operating the farm stand on the property, and website work.  

Farmer’s market days include the following tasks:  1. Load up van with farm crew, 2. Drive to market location (15min to 40min), 3. Unload market equipment and set up market stand, 4. Actively interact with farmers market patrons, 5. Break down and load up market stand and return to farm. 6. unload perishables with farm crew.

Start date and end dates are flexible.  Market season starts early May and ends in Late October.  Peak season is June 1 to September 30th.

Intern also has on-farm opportunities to learn other farming operations as well other opportunities include the following.

Work along side other farmers on a livestock-integrated vegetable and livestock operation.   1.5 acre organic vegetable operation on an established, direct-market farm. The farm utilizes farmer’s markets and other direct marketing.  Growing area is currently in production, including cover cropped areas.  One, 2000 sq ft high tunnel greenhouse is on the production area.  The garden area is part of a 16 acre farm primarily in livestock production. The garden benefits from closed-loop compost utilization from the livestock production portion of the farm.  Virtually unlimited, high-value compost maximizes vegetable yields.  

Livestock on farm through the production season include approximately 30 breed stock hogs, 150 butcher hogs, 350 laying hens, 400 meat chickens, 4 cattle, and 30 turkeys.

 

 

 


Educational Opportunities: Direct Marketing products from farm to consumer. Online store operating. Farmer's market operations. Farm business and inventory education.

Skills Desired: No prior experience required. Must have a valid driver's license and ability to safely drive a full-size van. Strong work ethic and commitment to small-scale agriculture required. Must be a people person with a positive attitude for vending at market. Basic computer skills needed to be functional operating online store and inventory.

Meals: Food is available from the garden, and eggs/pork/beef/chicken from farm. Farm dinners prepared for the farmers once per week.

Stipend: Stipend available depending on hours worked and number of farmer's markets attended.

Housing: Campers available on farm. Outdoor kitchen with water, refrigerator, gas range and wood burning range. Outdoor shower and composting toilet.
