General Farm Description: 20+acre Organic/biodynamic farm business on Bainbridge Island, Wa., a short ferry ride from Seattle. A rural island setting on Puget Sound with the maritime climate of Olympic rainforest and Cascade mountains. Beautiful acreage of rolling hills with pastured animals integrated in our food production. We specialize in season extension techniques to provide fresh produce throughout the year to our local community. Over an acre of various sized greenhouses, high tunnels, low tunnels and row covers to protect a wide variety of crops. Providing lots of fresh produce to our local community and food banks has become even more crucial during these trying times. Our other main focus is maintaining high levels of sustainable soil fertility in our farm. We accomplish this with extensive aerobic composting, large compost tea brewers, humic acid applications, no-till cultivation practices and cover cropping. I am looking for a young seriously motivated individual who is experienced with organic farming. This opportunity is for a hard working individual who is ready to learn and develop a successful small farm business plan. Looking for an individual with some farming experience as an assistant farm manager. This opportunity is to advance and hopefully take over the business in the near future. Especially interested in applicants that have mechanical experience with larger and small gas and diesel engines. This is a great opportunity to broaden your farming experience working as an manager for our farm crew this season. Butler Green Farms has grown into a very successful farming operation with a dedicated local that remains very supportive the past 41 years.
Educational Opportunities: Our farm emphasizes current marketing strategies for small market farms which include: CSA, Farmer's Market, restaurants, wholesale store accounts, established plant nursery and cut flower business. Besides fruits, vegetables, and flowers we raise chickens, turkeys and pigs. We process some foods in order to offer a large variety of produce year around to our 200 family CSA. A great educational opportunity to work beside a passionate organic farmer/mentor with over 49 years of experience developing the Organic vegetable market in the NW. This position is a great opportunity to learn how to operate a successful organic farm business and eventually be apart of our farm business or branch out and start your own.
Skills Desired: Small and large engine repair experience a plus. The ability to work well with other with aspirations of being a part of the management team.
Meals: farm fresh vegetables are provided
Stipend: Starting at $25 per hour.. After 60 days, a pay increase with incentives appropriate to level of responsibilities.
