General Farm Description: Amaltheia Organic Dairy is a family run farm located just outside of Bozeman, Montana in the foothills of the Bridger Mountains. We are a certified organic farm that has been handcrafting award winning goat cheeses for over 20 years. We utilize our by-products, creating our own compost, as well as grow a wide variety of vegetables. Our vegetable production consists of 9 acres, 5 high tunnels and 5 cat tunnels. We sell wholesale to grocery stores, select restaurants, two local farmers markets and began a CSA in 2022. This posting is for the vegetable production portion of the farm.CRAFT Member Farm? No

Field & Pack Crew Member requirements include:

There is a great deal of repetition required to perform many of the farms tasks, must be able to work with a sense of urgency and maintain a swift pace

Working in a bent over or kneeling position is a constant in this line of work (example: weeding for a full 10 hour work day) – you must be able to endure long stretches while maintaining speed and efficiency in the task at hand

Must be able to stand for several hours at a time while working with speed and efficiency (example: washing, weighing and packing vegetables for a full 10 hour work day)

Ability to maintain a positive attitude in extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rainy, windy)

Outside work is necessary in all weather conditions, therefore employees are expected to dress accordingly and be prepared for changes in the weather

A large percentage of the work will be working with one of the managers but there will also be an expectation that once you are trained on a task that you can work independently as well

Field & Pack Crew Member responsibilities include:
-
Harvesting a wide variety of vegetables including but not limited to: hand harvesting baby leaf lettuces, bunching kale, bunching root vegetables and picking hot crops like tomatoes, zucchini and cucumbers

Field Work: transplanting, weeding and row covering crops for pest and frost protection

Greenhouse Work: trellising, pruning, weeding and harvesting

Pack Shed Work: washing, weighing and packing vegetables with thorough attention to the needs of different produce for proper washing, packing and storage
Schedule & Hours:
This can be either a full time position (4 days a week) or a part time position (2 – 3 days a week) with varying start dates ranging from end of May to early July with work through the end of October – weather dependent. We prefer applicants that can commit through the end of October.
Full time work would include:

2 days harvesting in the morning & then driving to our pack shed to wash, weigh and pack produce for the remainder of the day

All field & pack crew members are expected to work 2 full pack shed days, every week. Work days are generally 7 am – 5 pm but please be aware that there are many days we go over the 10 hour mark in peak season (especially in August & September). Because of this it is of the utmost importance that you are flexible with your after-work plans. We strive to maintain a sane and balanced work schedule but there are times that we work later to ensure all products are washed and packed for delivery the next morning.
Educational Opportunities: We will have twice monthly catered lunches created with produce, cheese and pork from the farm. Each Fourth of July we do a farm "float down", firing up the pizza oven before we head tube down the Madison River as a crew. We plan to have a CSA members only pot luck/tour of the farm as well as a Farm to Table dinner. A kickball game with other farm crews in the Gallatin Valley. Large Volunteer Harvests in October to get all of our root crops out of the ground. Between 50 - 100 folks from the community showed up last season on each volunteer day! End of season potluck and bonfire.

Stipend: Pay is $14/hr or DOE with paid lunches
