Internship information
General Farm Description: We are a 2-acre vegetable and flower farm located in the hills above Homer, Alaska. We sell at our biweekly farmers market stand as well as wholesale and to local restaurants.

CRAFT Member Farm? No

Internship Starts: May 1
Internship Ends: Oct. 1
Number of Internship Available: 2
Application Deadline: Feb. 1
Minimum Length of Stay: 2 months

Internship Details:

Our interns learn every aspect of the farm, from soil management, bed prep, seeding and transplanting to harvesting, data entry, market sales, and year-end projects. We typically allow interns to “take over” the farm for at least one week of the season, typically in August, so that they can experience what managing the farm feels like. The internship is best suited to someone looking to start their own small-scale farm in a northern climate. It is not well suited to those looking to homestead or garden, as commercial production is a very different style of growing and management.

Educational Opportunities: We will tour other farms in the community and arrange work days on their operations to learn different techniques and practices. As well, there is an extensive library of education materials on small-scale agriculture here at the farm, including access to several masterclass programs.

Skills Desired: Must enjoy working outside in cold temperatures! We typically start and end with snow on the ground here at Latitude 59. We also expect farmers to be willing to learn to use some heavy machinery, including our walk-behind tractor and basic construction tools.

Meals: We provide food and a cooking space - some of our meals are shared, but others are self-service.

Stipend: $1000 per month.

Housing: Yes.
