General Farm Description: Moon River Farm is a small scale vegetable farm entering our 7th season. We focus on growing high quality and regionally appropriate vegetables for a 100 household CSA, the Manzanita Farmers Market, and select local restaurants/grocers. We grow using organic practices and techniques. We cultivate about 1.25 acres. Farm work is physically demanding, fast paced, and skilled work. As a crew we value a good attitude, clear communication, the ability to keep pace, and a sense of pride in the work we do. Growing food for good people and with good people is incredibly gratifying!

Internship Details:

This is a PAID position

We are looking for 2-3 seasonal team members to join our crew for the 2024 season

Positions are for 2-4 days/ week (could be 5 days for the right person)

Hours are 8am-4:45pm (if it’s hot, we sometimes start at 7am and quit when it hits 90 degrees which doesn’t happen very often, or we switch to a pack shed task in the shade)

This position runs from mid April/May to mid November (start date can be flexible)

$15.00-$17/hour DOE plus a CSA Share ($600 worth of vegetables)

Seasonal farm crew members are vital to the success of the farm. As a member of the team you will primarily harvest, wash and pack weekly vegetable orders in a team setting. We will train you on our high quality, cleanliness and consistency standards for our veggie products. You will play a crucial role in maintaining those standards. This work is fast paced, involves sharp knives, and  we harvest a lot of food in a day. It is fun and satisfying skilled work. As with all skills, you will build proficiency with effort and time.

There will also be 1-2 days/week of field work (i.e. planting, bed prep, weeding, trellising etc.) In the beginning and end of the season there is a heavier focus on field work. In the middle of the season the focus is on harvest.

For the right fit, you may also be scheduled to work at our farmers market booth in Manzanita. These shifts consist of packing and unpacking the van, setting up the booth, selling vegetables, and chatting with customers about the farm and vegetables, and packing up at the end the night and unloading the van back at the farm.  This shift is usually from 1pm-8:15pm

Our ideal candidate:

  • Is comfortable with physically demanding work in all weather conditions
  • has a basic knowledge of eating and buying vegetables.
  • is interested in learning more about growing vegetables.
  • is comfortable working alone or in small groups.
  • Enjoys keeping up with a fast pace while being detail oriented.
  • Is proficient in basic math.

Please note that farm work is physically demanding and can be repetitive. The work requires repeated bending, lifting, and lots of standing. You will need to be able to lift 50 lbs. off of the ground. We’ve made investments in systems and equipment to minimize wear and tear on our bodies, but the work is still physically demanding.

You must have reliable transportation to and from the farm.

It’s possible we may be able to help find housing

Previous farm experience, food service, or team sport is nice but not required.

Educational Opportunities: We offer a fast paced learning environment where you will be exposed to all aspects of working on a small-scale, mixed veggie operation.

Skills Desired: Previous farm experience will be considered but not necessary for applying. Experience working in the food service or playing competitive team sports are helpful background skills but not required. Attention to detail, a good attitude, and the ability to keep up with our pace are extremely important.

Meals: No, but the job comes with a weekly CSA share and surplus veggies from the farm.

Stipend: We offer compensation of $15-17/hr DOE plus a standard weekly CSA share and access to extra vegetables

Housing: Housing may be available to rent from our land mates or from our neighbors down the road. We may be able to assist with finding other local housing options as well.
