Internship Details:

This is a voluntary, unpaid working student position for the mutual benefit of the student and Palm Cottage Farm.

The intern wishes to experience an agricultural way of living and learn about sheepdog training and animal husbandry in exchange for their participation in day-to-day farm chores and activities related to animal training, animal husbandry and general farm management. In exchange for their contributions to the farm, the working student will receive room and board, weekly stipend, regular herding lessons with their own dog(s), opportunities to work with a variety of dogs provided through Palm Cottage Farm, opportunities to participate in clinics hosted at the farm, and regular coaching and guidance from an experienced working dog trainer.

Material compensation to the working student includes:

• Basic room and board for working student and 1-2 dogs (furnished room, power, heat, internet, some food)

A living expense stipend

Duties include but may not be limited to:

Sheepdog training and management:

  • Oversee exercise, feeding and general day-to-day care of client dogs
  • Assist with dog training
  • Dog poop patrol
  • Cleaning of crates, kennels & facilities
  • Maintain records

 

Daily Sheep Farm Responsibilities (vary significantly seasonally):

  • Clean sheep pens
  • Clean water troughs
  • Feed, water and provide minerals
  • Setup and move electronet fencing

Ad Hoc Farming Responsibilities:

  • Assist with event preparation & execution (sheepdog trial, clinics, etc.)
  • Assist at shearing and lambing
  • Assist with general veterinary care and grooming (vaccinations, worming, etc.)
  • Help with general farm maintenance as needed (e.g. fence repair, fire tending, mowing, etc.)Farm-Sitting Responsibilities

• Responsibility for animals and general farm / household duties (get mail, water plants in summer, feed & water house pets and chickens) Other duties as needed
