Internship information

General Farm Description: We are located in Basalt, CO- a beautiful, small mountain town. The farm is 1 mile from downtown Basalt. We are basically half way between Aspen and Glenwood Springs (about 30 mins to each) and about 15 minutes from Carbondale. It is a wonderful place to live and farm surrounded by beautiful mountains, rivers, and small towns. Two Roots Farm has been growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers for the Roaring Fork Valley using regenerative methods since 2016. We aim to grow food in the cleanest, healthiest way possible: prioritizing the vitality of our farmers, soil, and eaters above all else. We use organic growing practices, minimum tillage, biodynamic compost, crop rotations, high biodiversity, and sustainable methods to grow the best produce possible without the use of any chemicals, herbicides, or pesticides. We rely on integrated pest management, building healthy soil, and hard working farmers to maintain a vibrant farm. Our pastures are managed using rotational grazing, no-spray, and organic methods.. We sell our produce into the Roaring Fork Valley through a 200+member CSA, an onsite farmstand, and local restaurant sales. Additionally, Two Roots Farm provides produce to Lift Up (Basalt- Rifle) Food pantries. Our goal is to grow the healthiest food possible while fostering a positive work environment, vibrant soil, and community connection. I believe that soil is our most precious resource and we are constantly working towards ways to better protect it and enable life. We work hard in the growing season, in all the elements (wind, rain, cold, and heat) to get the job done. We also have a really good time and eat amazing food.

Internship Details:

As field lead, you would be helping supervise and direct the day to day operations of the farm including field work, irrigation, cultivation, bed turnover, planting, seeding, fertility, grounds work, and farm projects. It’s a big job! We typically have around a 7 person crew, and there is a strong emphasis on healthy team dynamic and teamwork. As field lead, you will be expected to facilitate a productive work environment and team dynamic with effective leadership.

 

While sales may be part of your job, the focus of this position is overall farm management and leading the team in field work. It is a physically demanding job that requires you to love working outside, challenging yourself, critical problem solving, and working with mother nature. 

 

In addition to this position, our team structure for 2024 will likely consist of myself (Harper), a harvest lead, a greenhouse lead, data lead, and well rounded crew members. You will work directly with myself and the other leads to plan the day’s priorities and keep the farm on track. 

 

Crop Production:

• Manage and participate in all areas of crop production including seeding, planting,

cultivating, harvesting and packaging.

• Develop daily and weekly farm plans.
• Set up overhead and drip irrigation, schedule and monitor irrigation of crops.
• Implement regenerative agricultural practices such as cover cropping and crop rotation

to maintain soil health and to limit pest and disease pressure.

• Monitor potential threats to crops such as weather conditions, irrigation problems, and

pest & disease pressure.

 

Team Management:

• Manage a team of 7ish farm workers and various volunteer help throughout the season.
• Train and supervise farm crew, striving for efficient and productive teamwork.
• Delegate tasks and provide guidance to maintain a motivated and happy workforce.
• Foster a positive, collaborative work environment that promotes team communication

and respect.

• Communicate and plan regularly with the farm owner and other leads

 

Farm Maintenance:

• Maintain farm infrastructure, equipment, and facilities in proper working order.
• Organize and oversee repairs, maintenance and upgrades as necessary to ensure safe

and efficient operations.

• Explore opportunities to improve farm organization, systems, and practices.

 

Nuts a bolts:

 

Start Date: Somewhat flexible and DOE, as early as February, 2024 but no later than March 31, 2024

End Date: This position goes through mid November, with some potential to continue through the winter in a part time capacity. 

 

Pay: Depending on Experience (Minimum of $20/hr and all farm fresh veggies you can eat!)

 

Housing: It is possible to arrange some onsite seasonal housing in an airstream trailer, but I am happy to work with you to find a good solution and offer some possibilities in the valley. Would love to find someone who aims to be with Two Roots for several seasons, and will help the right person find long term housing. Folks already living in the valley are given preference.

 

Schedule:  5 days a week

Tentative schedule: 7:00-4:30 Monday-Thursday, Slightly abbreviated work day Saturday with the greenhouse manager– solo projects, planning, and organizing. Monday-Thursday we will have an hour-long team lunch. We all take on cooking duty so that each day one crew member is cooking for the rest of the team. 

 

Time Off: You are awarded 5 paid days off. Additional unpaid days off granted on a case by case basis. Vacations strongly encouraged to happen outside of the peak season (June-August)

 

Qualifications: 

• Experience managing a vegetable and/or farming operation preferred
• Management experience and experience in a physically demanding job required 
• Need to be able to lift 50+ lbs 
• Ability to work long hours doing physical work outside in various types of conditions
• Positive attitude and team-oriented 
• Spanish language proficiency preferred
• Ability to work alone and self motivate as well as lead and manage a team
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Strong knowledge of and passion for regenerative farming principles.
• Ability to accept and share feedback in a team environment.
• Ability to work outside their regular scheduled hours, to be available for emergency and/or additional pre-arranged work.

 

Educational Opportunities: You will learn about all aspects of a small organic vegetable farm.
