Internship Details:

LOOKING FOR 1 FULL SEASON APPRENTICE FOR 2026! Get an immersive, in-depth experience of all facets of running a farm as you learn how we drive profitability through season extension, a focused product mix that maximizes our small footprint & serves the needs of our community, and a farm-to-table woodfired pizza business. APPRENTICE will learn all the same foundational principles and knowledge that our interns learn, but on a deeper level with much more attention paid to the higher-level planning and decisions we make regarding cropping and soil health, as well as the business/administrative aspects of running a farm such as marketing, managing a CSA and other sales outlets, navigating available ag grants, insurance needs, bookkeeping, and more. This position is intended for an individual who wants to explore farming as a career, from the tactile skills needed to manage cropping/harvesting/handling to the more extensive skill set needed to run a small business. We “start” our season in April when we open up our weekly CSA for early season greens and crops from our high tunnels, and “end” our season in the field in early November while continuing to sell fall storage crops and fresh greens from the high tunnels through Christmas. Our busiest sales times of the year are actually on the shoulders of the main season (spring, and late fall), and during the main summer season we are very busy with high vegetable demand, but also focus more on the pizza side of the business To get the most from this experience, the right candidate for our APPRENTICE will want to arrive in April and stay at least through early November to maximize their experience, vs. our internship program which is geared more towards the main part of the season (summer) and is perfect for students attending college.

What to expect:
*Learn about Regenerative Agriculture in a beautiful location, on a small team that values having fun and creating a positive working and learning environment… learn about growing, harvesting, & selling vegetables and cut flowers within the context of climate change and adapting to extreme weather events. Enjoy living in our gorgeous antique farmhouse, with your own private quarters, as you dive deep into all aspects of farming.
• Learn all aspects of veggie & flower operations: seeding, planting, weeding & cultivation, pruning, mulching, harvesting, processing, flower arranging, high tunnel growing, CSA, farmers markets, and more.
• Learn all about soil health regenerative practices such as no-till, cover crop management, use of carbonaceous and living mulches, foliar-feeding, beneficial insect habitat, hügelkultur permaculture techniques, building healthy soils, composting, and more.
• Enjoy learning about our farm-to-table food business with our wood-burning pizza oven. Eat a lot of pizza!
*We love to share our knowledge on things we are doing to adapt to climate change and extreme weather, as well as how we approach diversified market growing in a small-scale footprint, along with year-round food production in New England utilizing only passive solar heat in our low and high tunnels (no fossil fuels).
*Learn about how we move from spring into summer, what we plant and when in the open fields, and how we transition our high tunnels from early spring crops into main season summer crops like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and more. APPRENTICE will learn how to manage our main-season nightshades under covered culture (a very different approach vs. open-field), and how to drive efficiencies and profitability in this system.
*Learn about how we approach the “big flip” in midsummer, as we flip our garlic and onion beds into fall crops like carrots, radishes, and turnips. APPRENTICE will get an in-depth education on alliums, and what it takes to bring in a successful harvest/curing of garlic, onions, and shallots. APPRENTICE will also learn about the time constraints and field management practices with regards to what fall crops we choose & why, and when/how they need to be planted and maintained for a successful fall harvest.
*Learn all the in’s and out’s of product handling, from harvest windows to proper packaging, storage and washing procedures to ensure top notch quality and longer shelf life. (Our customers absolutely rave about our quality standards and shelf life of our products, a great differentiator for us).
*Take part in some higher level fun projects that are underway right now: utilizing our new low tunnels and caterpillar tunnels for their first full season in our crop plan, mapping out and planning for the creation of a pick-your-own cut flower garden, planting the first of our in-ground fig trees, learn about grafting fruit trees as we move forward into phase 2 of establishing a small orchard, and take part as we get ready to host on-farm pizza nights for our community.
*Learn how some of our conservation projects such as pollinator plantings, bat boxes, and raptor perches contribute to the overall health of the farm and ecosystem at large.
*Learn about the tools we use to manage a small business, from bookkeeping to sales tracking. Get in-depth experience with regards to other aspects of running a farm business: insurance, taxes, marketing, and managing our sales outlets.
*Learn about the many grants available to farmers and how you can apply for them in the future.

Educational Opportunities: in-depth dive into all things farming, from crop planning to planting, to managing a no-till regenerative system, harvesting/processing/handling, marketing and selling, sales tracking and bookkeeping, conservation efforts, building resilience into the farm in an era of extreme weather events, maximizing field space/small footprint and 4 season growing in un-heated high tunnels, running a small business, managing a high volume CSA, running a farm-to-table food business, and so much more (much of which is outlined in the position description!)

Skills Desired: No experience necessary, but the right candidate will have a passion for making agriculture a career and will be a hard-working individual who enjoys a positive and fun work environment.
