Internship information
General Farm Description: Sound Pine Farm is located on an 85-acre property, of which 63 are pasture and the rest wooded. We lease 3-acres, and cultivate just under 2. We grow annual vegetables for a June-October CSA and seedlings for a spring plant sale. Our farm exclusively serves a vegetable CSA of about 100 local households. We have two CSA distributions per week, Mondays and Thursdays, both of which are located on the farm. Our CSA is free-choice, meaning members have complete customization over their share with regards to selection and quantity of vegetables they take. Our vegetables are grown in permanent no-till beds. We use a deep-mulch system on all beds, have use of a 65HP tractor for some farm tasks, but most work, including transplanting, weeding, and harvest, is done by hand. We are not certified organic, but grow using organic practices. We use as little single-use plastic as possible, and instead use long-lasting landscape fabric on beds that need to be covered. We grow all of our own seedlings and those for the seedling sale on-site in a heated greenhouse.CRAFT Member Farm? No

Internship Details:
Our ideal candidate is someone whose goal is to manage a farm or start their own farm in the future. Though you would often work with the farm owner, the ideal candidate is also comfortable working independently.
An apprentice will be asked to do much of what the owner/operator does. You will learn all aspects of greenhouse management and seedling production, field management, crop production, harvest, and CSA distribution. At the end of the season, we will go over crop successes and failures and make adjustments to the crop plan.
Tasks include:
managing seedling greenhouse, including: filling trays; seeding; watering
bed prep and transplanting, including: use of the tractor; mulching; broadforking; soil testing and amending, and planting
crop management, including: weeding, trellising/pruning, irrigating, mowing
harvest and processing, including: planning; harvest and washing/ sorting/ bagging and storage of all crops
CSA tasks, including: running CSA distribution; setting up and breakdown; washing bins
Other, optional tasks involve writing newsletters, managing social media, recipe testing, and learning skills required to manage a farm including crop planning, budgeting, etc., as desired.
Educational Opportunities: This job is heavily education-based. Apprentice will learn most of the tasks involved in running the farm, and time will be taken to ensure you feel confident and fully supported in those tasks. In addition, Maine has a lot of resources for beginning farmers, and attending farming workshops, such as MOFGA’s Farmer Training Projects, will be encouraged!
Skills Desired: A good candidate for this apprenticeship has patience, humility, an enthusiasm for learning, is able to work independently, and is willing to take on some of the less-fun aspects that are part and parcel of owning a farm. Important qualities we are looking for: -Desire to learn, work hard, and take on a sense of responsibility for the farm. -Ability to follow directions and to ask for direction when more input is needed. -Attention to detail. -The capacity to keep yourself engaged and aware of an evolving and expanding role on the farm. An awareness of what is going on around you, and the ability to recognize what might be needed next. -The capacity to do repetitive tasks, sometimes alone. -A capacity for nonviolent communication and respect for others. -A willingness to be safe and respectful with machinery and equipment. -Social skills and a desire to interact with CSA members. -The ability to enjoy a long day outside in hot/cold/rainy conditions. -The ability to live in a small space by yourself. -A passion for self-care and a plan to support your body and mind throughout a season of hard physical labor. -Prior experience on a commercial vegetable farm preferred, but not necessary. In addition, you will need to have: -A valid drivers license and your own vehicle, as downtown is a short-drive away. -Ability to lift 50 pounds. -At least 2 references: at least 1 previous employer and 1 personal.
Meals: No, but apprentice will have accessible to whatever vegetables they'd like.
Stipend: $1450/month plus $200 workwear stipend, and year-end bonus upon completion of season.
Housing: On-farm housing is provided, and given the schedule, living on the farm is recommended. You will be in a tiny house (10’x30′ plus loft) with electricity, running water, and septic. Queen bed is located in loft (50″ at the peak) accessed by ladder. House has a four-burner induction stove, 24″ oven, 4 ft’ soaking tub/shower combo, washer/dryer combo unit, wood stove, and minisplit heat pump.
