Internship information
General Farm Description: "North Valley Organics is a farm located on three urban agricultural plots in Albuquerque’s North Valley. We grow certified organic, fresh market vegetables for sale to local school districts, CSAs and farmer’s markets in central New Mexico. We are a USDA-certified training site for those interested in principles of soil health and organic agriculture. We use a living mulch, minimal till cover-crop system for growing fresh market vegetables that allows us to farm intensively while simultaneously feeding our soil. Our principal cash crops are tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet potatoes, garlic, carrots, peas and green beans. All of our practices are inspired by the biodynamic worldview and values as well as the principles of holistic ecosystem management. "CRAFT Member Farm? No

Internship Details:
“For the 2024 season, North Valley Organics is looking for qualified individuals to join our team as Farm Assistants. Farm Assistants will be included in all aspects of farm work including field prep, planting, harvesting, marketing, infrastructure work and farm planning. Our primary focus is on growing high-quality produce, but we are also exploring opportunities for expansion into value-added processing and animal husbandry. Farm Assistants with experience in either of these areas might have the opportunity to take on leadership roles in these projects.
Farm Assistants typically work 24 hours a week, although we are willing to give more hours to experienced candidates or consider part-time hours for candidates with other commitments. Farm Assistants can generally design their own schedule as long as the hours fall between 7 am and 4 pm Monday thru Friday. Early morning hours are highly recommended during summer months. Hours will be reduced in February, March, November and December.”
Educational Opportunities: "As a USDA-certified training facility, we have a lot of educational opportunities to offer. All members of our team will be immersed in the sustainable, organic farming practices we use including living mulch systems, cover cropping, crop rotation, irrigation management and the use of beneficial biological inoculants. Our farm has an intellectual culture, so field days are generally full of great discussions about the present and future of agriculture. We can also help connect staff to other organic farms and members of the farming community in the Albuquerque area. Finally, team members will have the opportunity to network with our partners in major agricultural institutions such as the USDA, the Bernalillo County Extension service, Western SARE and many more. "
Skills Desired: "We are seeking individuals with a long term interest in small-scale sustainable agriculture in New Mexico. To join our team, a person must be both self directed and willing to learn, able to manage their own work when necessary and also work as part of a team. Any candidate MUST be able to repeatedly lift heavy objects (25-50 lbs) and perform regular and frequent squats. They must also be able to perform long hours of manual labor in challenging weather conditions. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience being or working outdoors, particularly in the southwest or other arid climates. All candidates are required to have health insurance and to be up to date on vaccinations. "
Meals: "Staff members are be expected to bring their own meals to work, but also have access to farm produce for personal use. "
Stipend: We pay $12/hour in addition to unlimited access to our produce.
Housing: "We do not provide housing, but our farm is located in the city of Albuquerque, where there are many housing options. "
