Clip and Weigh Forage Yield Calculator
By Lee Rinehart and Dave Scott, NCAT Agriculture Specialists
Overview
Proper paddock size, grazing periods, and rest periods in the paddocks are best achieved by having accurate forage yield measurements. The “clip-and-weigh” method, or “hoop” method, is one of the best ways to measure forage productivity. This calculator will help you plan your grazing season by simplifying the process of estimating dry matter forage yield. Simple instructions are included for sampling forage and using the calculator.
This calculator will provide dry matter yield values for forage sampled in pounds per acre and pounds per acre per day, which is useful in allocating forage to animal demand with the Grazing Plan Worksheet: Forage Production and Grazing Demand.
