General Farm Description: Founded in 2003, Pennypack Farm is a 501(c)3 non-profit diversified vegetable farm growing with organic and regenerative practices in Horsham, PA (eastern Montgomery County). The work we do on the farm is centered around our mission to Grow, Give, and Teach. Grow: Growing on 13 acres, we run a 380-member Summer CSA from the end of May through early November and a 180-member Winter CSA from late November through early March. We also attend the Ambler Farmers’ Market weekly. We grow over 150 different varieties of 60 different crops, aiming to provide our community with high quality and nutrient-dense produce consistently throughout the year. Building our soil’s health and fertility is the foundation of our farming practices, and we strive to be good stewards of the land by using regenerative methods to ensure the farm’s productivity for many years to come. Give: An integral piece of our farm’s mission is increasing accessibility to high quality organically grown, local produce in our community. As part of our Produce Giving Program we donate produce weekly to four different food pantry partners and also work with other local hunger relief organizations throughout the year. In 2020, we donated 20,000 lbs of produce to our community as part of this program. Teach: The farm focuses on educating the next generation of farmers through our summer internship and apprenticeship programs. We also teach our community the importance of sustainable, locally grown food through volunteer opportunities, weekly newsletters, and workshops.

All crew members will be participating in duties such as weeding, planting, harvesting, irrigation, general crop care, field clean-up, engaging with volunteers, seeding/greenhouse work, and tractor work for apprentices and seasonals. Prior tractor experience is not required.

20-Month Farmer Apprenticeship Program

• • Runs from March 2023-November 2024
  • The Farmer Apprentice Program is designed to provide the necessary training to those wishing to pursue organic/sustainable farming as a livelihood, and graduates of the apprenticeship will have the necessary skills to manage a farm.
  • On-farm training is supported with a curriculum including topics such as irrigation, weed management, pest life cycles, anatomy, & control, plant disease anatomy & control, soil health, reading soil samples, and cover cropping. In addition, we encourage off-farm educational opportunities like farm tours, workshops, and conferences as schedule permits. 
  • Compensation: $2,750 stipend per month, with an increase in January of the second year, paid twice a month and weekly seasonal produce

2 Full-Time and 1 Part Time Seasonal Crew Members, ranging in start time, generally April/May through October/November. $16/hour

12-Week Summer Internship for those just exploring agriculture for the first time. $3700 stipend for 12 weeks. Starts in Mid-May or early June and runs 12 weeks until program completion.

Educational Opportunities: Farmer training is one of our educational missions as a non-profit. We provide hands-on field training for all our crew members and are eager to teach all topics of sustainable agriculture to those in our team. Apprentices receive more formalized educational opportunities in the off-season.

Skills Desired: For apprenticeship and seasonals, at least one season of work on farms is preferred, although not required. Outdoor or athletic experience is always a plus for all positions. In all positions we are looking for enthusiasm to learn, motivated, personable, able to keep organized, work at pace, walk, bend, kneel repetitively for long hours, work in all weather, heavy lifting, prepared for the physical and emotional requirements of a farming lifestyle, and be excited to grow food and engage in our community. A sense of humor goes a long way!

Meals: No, but weekly produce is provided, snack breaks and an hour for lunch.
