Halbert Farm offers a unique internship opportunity for individuals passionate about rare breeds and sustainable agriculture. Interns will gain hands-on experience in the daily care of Horses, Kunekune pigs, Mini Zebu cows, and Salmon Faverolle and Dorking chickens. Responsibilities include feeding, cleaning, assisting with piglet care, and learning about the specific needs of each breed. This internship is ideal for motivated individuals seeking a rewarding experience in a working farm environment.
Educational Opportunities: Animal Husbandry: Breed-Specific Knowledge: Learning about the unique characteristics, needs, and temperaments of each breed (e.g., Kunekune pigs' foraging habits, Mini Zebu cows' adaptability, specific poultry breed egg-laying patterns). Daily Care: Participating in feeding, watering, cleaning, grooming, and general animal welfare. Health Management: Learning to recognize signs of illness, administering basic first aid (under supervision), understanding preventative care, and working with a veterinarian. Breeding and Reproduction: Observing or assisting with breeding, birthing, and newborn care. Handling and Training: Learning safe and effective animal handling techniques. Farm Operations: Pasture Management: Understanding rotational grazing, fencing, and maintaining healthy pastures. Infrastructure Maintenance: Learning about repairing fences, buildings, and equipment. Record Keeping: Participating in tracking animal records, feed consumption, and other important data. Equipment Operation: Learning to safely operate farm machinery (if applicable and age-appropriate).
Skills Desired: We seek highly motivated individuals with a strong work ethic and a keen eye for detail. Ideal candidates will be self-starters who can work independently and take initiative. Experience with livestock or agriculture is a plus, but a genuine passion for animal welfare and a willingness to learn are essential.

Stipend: It's possible.
Housing: You'll have your own private bedroom with guest bath. Guest bath will only be used by the intern or if there is company or farm tours that need to use a restroom.
