Disadoption Rates Challenge Conservation Practice Gains

A study from Iowa State University found that many farmers who adopted cover crops and no-till did not continue with these conservation practices. A survey showed that nearly 20% of farmers who used cover crops in one year had stopped using them by the following year. Similarly, about 13% of no-till adopters discontinued the practice after one year. Study authors note that these reversals significantly reduced net adoption rates over time. The study suggests that short-term incentive programs may not be effective in promoting sustained conservation, and that programs should look toward strategies such as longer-term financial incentives, regular engagement with adopters, and tailored outreach based on regional characteristics in order to maintain initial conservation gains.
