General Farm Description: Hill and Hollow Farm is a small, certified organic family farm in the heart of Metcalfe County, Kentucky. We cultivate 3 acres using predominantly human powered, no-till farming techniques. We have a CSA serving 50 families in Nashville, Tennessee and also operate a stand each Saturday during our season. Our CSA also serves Edmonton, Glasgow and Burkesville Kentucky with individualized pick up available locally. We raise heritage-breed wool sheep and have developed an exciting line of farm-fiber products. We offer long and short term farm apprenticeships in addition to hosting school groups and families for on-farm educational workshops. Internship Details:
It was the summer of 1994 when I was introduced to farming on an Illinois CSA farm. In the years since then my love of farming and working with others hasn’t dwindled. I have traveled and worked with banana farmers in Australia, orchardists in New Zealand and mixed vegetable growers US before finding this place here in south central Kentucky. Since 1998 we have called this farm home. We have hosted WWOOFers since 2001!
We are currently a mother-daughter farm management team, with an older and younger son on the sidelines ALSO pitching in most days. We offer anyone that comes to our farm the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of life on our 200-acre family farm. We rely heavily on non-mechanized “”human-powered”” gardening on our 2 acre mixed vegetable/herb/cut flower operation. Entering our 27th year of a successful CSA program, we make weekly trips to Nashville, TN to deliver 50 baskets of vegetables to our shareholders. We practice biodynamic farming and are always working to further enhance our farm’s self sustainability. A herd of Jacob’s sheep, Jack and Rosie our resident horses, and a plethora of poultry provide our farm with fertility and offer animal husbandry opportunities for our apprentices.
After 20+ years of hosting, we still enjoy mentoring people interested in self-sufficiency, sustainable agriculture, biodynamic farming practices, fiber farming, community building, on-farm education, homesteading, homeschooling, and all aspects of a diverse small, first-generation, family farm. We welcome visitors to be involved in all activities, including our shiitake mushroom operation, vegetable, herb, and flower seeding, planting, cultivating, and harvesting, and working with our livestock. We especially enjoy assistants in our busiest summer months while in addition to managing the vegetable operation, we are using dye plants raised here to turn our farm fiber into glorious color! With an ongoing relationship with the region’s Waldorf schools, our farm team has the possibility to work with school groups as well as short-term guests throughout the season. With three high tunnels, one heated greenhouse, and a root cellar, we are focusing more and more on year-round production and delivery. Over the past years we have been working with dye plants and using them to add value to our farm’s wool products. Now, as we enter 2026, we can offer a solid introduction to plant dyeing and the opportunity to focus on a vast array of local fiber projects to folks interested. Anyone looking for a solid introduction to certified organic CSA farming, while enjoying plenty of time spent learning critical homesteading skills and farm crafting, may find this the perfect place for them. Join us, the year ahead is looking more exciting than ever!
