Our small farm in beautiful Astoria, Oregon is looking for a wonderful resident farmhand for the 2026 season. Open to farm-enthusiastic and farm-curious folks interested in spending some time learning around sheep.
About the farm.
Sugarfield is a 9.5 acre property in Astoria, Oregon. We are on a small, dead end road with a slough across the street; perfect for kayaking and watching beautiful sunsets. Sugarfield offers a quiet, country feel and is only a 12 minute drive to downtown Astoria’s shops, restaurants and entertainment. Half an acre holds the Farmhouse, Cottage house, and an old red barn. The rest of the property is in open pasture. Sugarfield is home to Pony Jacobson (farmer/shearer), SA Davidson (writer/host), a flock of 24 Romney sheep, three working dogs and an old horse.
About the work.
The position is open March 1, 2026-July 31, 2026. Farmhands may choose their length of stay (4 weeks-6 months) and level of involvement (15-20 hrs/wk). We ask for a minimum 4 week commitment to be considered for the position and it is best suited to people who can safely lift 50 pounds and are comfortable working independently in all-weather conditions. Tasks will include daily feeding/watering and moving of animals and may include field management.
About the housing and compensation.
You will be housed in a large converted living room on the first floor of the 100 year old Farmhouse. The house is shared full time with SA and occasionally with Pony and his two very well-behaved Border collies when he stops in from his shearing travels. There is a large kitchen and small bathroom with a stand-up shower (great water pressure!). Your room is 15 x 21ft and is furnished with a bed, sitting area, dresser, desk and chair. All utilities and internet are included and there is laundry on site. No cats and no alcohol, please.
People choosing 15 hours of work a week will receive $200/week and two days off per week. People choosing 20 hours of work a week will receive $300/week and two days off per week. Some food is provided.
