General Farm Description: Lazy Mule Farm is a certified organic small mix powered farm in the beautiful corner of NE Oregon, in the shadow of the Wallowa Mountains, on 18 acres of leased land. Our farm is divided into two primary sections, a 1 acre fenced market style garden and five 3/4 acre plots dedicated to the production of garlic for seed. The market garden area is 1 acre inside of a deer fence that is managed with walk behind tractors, hand tools, and minimal till methods. We use appropriate technology to grow a lot of food in this small space, with a focus on soil health we plant in permanent raised beds so we can grow more food in a small space rather than cropping more ground. This section of the farm is focused on the wholesale production of baby lettuce mix, medicinal calendula and chamomile production plus personal crops for the farm. The five 3/4 acre sections are managed primarily by draft horse/mule power. Only one 3/4 section is in garlic production per season and the remainder are in various stages of cover crop. We do have a tractor to help with transplanting, mowing, and heavy lifting. In 2026 the farm will be harvesting our garlic, then undergoing a dynamic shift. We plan to reduce the amount of ground we grow in garlic, and branch out into more medicinal herb production within our 5 year garlic rotation. The remainder of our acreage is managed in rotational grazing to keep our 9 head of horses happy and fed.

Internship Details:

We are looking for an individual who would like to help us in the planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, and packing of our produce and herbs. Since we are a small diversified farm that includes stock and pasture management we expect our crew to be proficient at many tasks. We will provide training, but there is much to learn and someone who likes attention to detail will thrive. We expect our crew member to be committed to improving their speed and quality of work thru the season. Crew members are expected to work well with others, as well as individually.

There will be exposure to many things on the farm including the draft animals. Unfortunately this is not a paid training position on how to drive the horses or do horse drawn field work. The daily care of stock and pasture are part of the rhythm of the farm, and there will be lots of exposure to our critters and there will be chance for involvement.  Most of the paid work on the farm will have to do with the production of our cash crops, especially harvest and post harvest handling.

Full Time Farm Crew (May1-Oct10)

  • We’re looking for folks who can work a 4 dayweek.

    • Part-time: 4 days/week- 30-32 hrs/wk

  • Starting wage $17-19/hr DOE,

  • Time off directly after garlic harvest in July
  • $150 gear stipend paid in your first work week
  • During the week of Garlic Harvest expect to work additional time as we must get this crop in, as well as the usual tasks around salad and calendula flowers.
  • Time off directly after the garlic harvest (there is a 2 week lull post harvest of the garlic where it would be possible to schedule a longer vacation)

Primary Tasks:

  • Harvest- During the main part of our season, the majority of time is taken up by harvesting, and post harvest handling washing and packing produce. There will be weekly salad harvest and delivery, as well as 2x week harvest of calendula and chamomile flowers. During the 3 primary garlic pushes it is all hands on deck. Scape popping in June, harvest in july (typically takes around 10 days because we need to still fit in regular farm tasks), and again around august 10th when we have to prune all the garlic. We require our team to be efficient and focused especially during this time. We move quickly through many tasks, but there is also repetition.

  • Farm tasks: Cultivation (weeding), Transplanting, Pruning, Trellising, Crop Removal, and Crop Care are all tasks we do on a regular basis.

  • Irrigation: We are in a high dry environment typically and watering crops or pasture will be part of daily tasks.

  • Fencing: Learning to use temporary electric fence to manage stock and building hardwire fence as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Agricultural experience preferred but not required. Experience working manual labor and/or in the service industry is also great.  Farming is hard work and you must be prepared for that!

  • Ability to lift 40-50 pounds and work bent over for extended periods of time, in any type of weather.

  • Must be able to commit to the full season.

  • Ability to work efficiently with teammates and also independently. Maintaining consistent pace is imperative in production work.

  • Strong communication skills are necessary to keep our team on the same page.

  • Excellent attention to detail and willingness to focus and learn. We will train you on all tasks but expect you meet quality and efficiency standards

  • Positive attitude is key, because a negative one can bring the team down when things get hard, hot or cold.

  • Proficiency at mental math to tally harvest numbers and basic orders at farm, as well as to log harvest records
