USDA Renews 56 Substances Listed for Organic Production
The National Organic Standards Board and National Organic Program completed the 2026 Sunset Review of the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances and renewed fifty-six substances until 2031. The complete list of renewed substances is available in a Federal Register notice published on February 9, 2026. With this action, 24 synthetic substances continue to be allowed in organic crop and livestock production and two natural substances continue to be prohibited. In addition, 24 nonagricultural substances and six nonorganic substances continue to be allowed in organic handling. The National Organic Standards Board reviews every substance on the National List every five years to evaluate whether it continues to meet criteria required to remain on the list.
