General Farm Description: Small vegetable farm located in eastern South Dakota. We grow dozens of varieties of vegetables and sell through a CSA and an on farm vegetable stand. We are not certified organic, but do meet or exceed the National Organic Program rules and regulations. For the 2023 season we are expanding our agritourism experiences to include woodfired pizza at the farm and our own events in addition to our 75 person CSA. As an intern, your primary focus would be on the CSA and learning all that you can about growing vegetables in a relatively short season, managing customer expectations, running farm equipment, and more. We are located 15 minutes south of the Sioux Falls which is the largest city in the state. Our farm community is incredible. We are entering our 13th year of growing vegetables and 2nd year of hosting events. All of the interns that we have hosted over the years have become a part of our farm family. We look for people who are eager to learn, can go with the flow, and at the end of a hard day have a fun. The farm also doubles as a small campground, event venue, and farm animal sanctuary. Internship Details:
40+ hours per week internship–some weeks it’s a little more, some a little less. Learn all aspects of small farm food production, from seed to harvest. Marketing, equipment, irrigation, fertilization, plant health, customer service, food safety, food preservation, animal care, etc. This is a great opportunity for someone who’s wondering if they have what it takes to operate their own farm one day.
Educational Opportunities: Hands-on education. Job will include starting plants from seed, transplanting, direct seeding, drip irrigation planning and setup, weeding, pest control, plant health diagnosis and treatment, harvesting, washing, packing, working at a stand, handling money, operating a tractor with various implements, operating several hand tools, marketing and social media, processing and canning vegetables, livestock care, customer service, and overall land/farm management. Valid driver's license required.
