Western Region
NCAT’s Western regional team has varied areas of expertise to assist farmers and ranchers throughout California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, and Arizona. The sustainable agriculture specialists focus on training, technical assistance, and support related to sustainable agriculture production. From biosolarization and hedgerows, to hemp production and pest management, they provide individual assistance to farmers and ranchers on a variety of topics.
The regional team helps NCAT to meet the needs of a large and diverse agricultural community. It serves as a hub for NCAT’s work with immigrant and Spanish-speaking farmers. This includes hosting the annual Latino Farmer Conference, a longstanding partnership with the Natural Resources Conservation Partnership.
NCAT collaborates with many government agencies and nonprofit organizations in the region, offering training on transitioning to organic agriculture, direct marketing, and other sustainable agriculture topics.
Rocky Mountain West Region
NCAT’s Rocky Mountain West team serves Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, and Wyoming.
The Rocky Mountain West team specializes in local food and educational outreach in the Butte community through the Small-Scale Intensive Farm Training (SIFT) project, local food systems support, and outreach across Montana through the Farm to School network, Farmers Market programs, the Montana Harvest of the Month network, SNAP dollar programs, and the Grow Montana Food Policy Coalition, which is coordinated by NCAT.
The Rocky Mountain West team supports farmer-veteran training through NCAT’s Armed to Farm program and leads regional soil health and regenerative grazing work through NCAT’s Soil for Water project. This team has been among the leaders of Montana’s organic pulse crop growth and specializes in agricultural insurance and support systems for organic production.
Southwest Region
Since 2010, the Southwest Regional team has been serving Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Utah.
The team is a trusted source of technical assistance, education, and training on sustainable agriculture and water conservation. Our specialties include soil health, organic farming, regenerative grazing, local and regional food systems, cover crops, and outreach to underserved communities. We create feasibility studies, educational materials, and planning tools to accelerate the growth of local food production and marketing in our region. We also offer practical solutions to the challenge of water shortages and chronic drought conditions in the American Southwest.
Our team developed and leads NCAT’s Soil for Water project, working to capture and hold more water in the soil across the United States.
Gulf States Region
NCAT’s Gulf States team serves Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. Opened in 2013, the Gulf States regional office is located in historic downtown Jackson, Mississippi.
The Gulf States team specializes in the agricultural component of NCAT’s mission by providing information and expertise on sustainable farming for low-income, minority, and historically underserved populations. Mississippi has consistently high poverty and obesity rates. The Gulf States staff focus on issues specific to the region through a range of collaborative projects that center on sustainable agriculture and food justice. Our community food systems work is a key focus of the Gulf States team, which has pivoted conversations, relationships, and the way we view food systems work in the state of Mississippi.
Our team’s specialty areas include financial and risk management, vegetable production, livestock production, community food systems, and small ruminant husbandry. Our team includes a certified inspector in livestock.
Southeast and Appalachia Region
NCAT’s Southeast Regional Office team serves Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. In the late 1980s, NCAT opened an office in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Today, the office is located in the heart of Fayetteville, two blocks north of the historic downtown square.
Our agricultural specialists cover a wide range of topics such as tree fruit production, livestock production, crop production, soil health, pest management, local foods, and farm business planning and marketing. Several staff members have training and expertise in organic and certified naturally grown certification.
NCAT Southeast staff members support NCAT’s Soil for Water and ATTRA Sustainable Agriculture programs, providing one-on-one technical assistance, educational materials, and training to support farmers who want to implement regenerative and sustainable practices on their farms. We also work on the Armed to Farm program, which trains active-duty service members and military veterans to start and run sustainable farming operations.
For more than 30 years, NCAT’s Southeast Office team has partnered with individuals, educational institutions, and organizations—not only in the Southeast but also nationwide—to provide expert speakers for courses, collaborate on research projects, and lead workshops. We deeply value our partners and clients. Northeast Region
NCAT’s Northeast Region team covers from Maine to Maryland to Michigan. Our team is spread across the region in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky.
Our team specializes in working with farmers in whole-farm planning, intensive crop production, hemp production, building cooperative markets, tools and equipment for the small farm, agroforestry, urban agriculture, and beekeeping. We also specialize in regenerative grazing and pasture management, livestock production, and fish farming. Our team’s background also includes organic crop and livestock production, greenhouse production and season extension, and farm energy. We can help farmers with organic certification, designing and implementing energy savings on the farm, and in helping new and seasoned farmers manage towards their farm and family goals.
The staff in the Northeast Region support the ATTRA Sustainable Agriculture program by providing practical one-on-one technical assistance to farmers and ranchers, and are key members of the Armed to Farm, Soil for Water, and AgriSolar Clearinghouse teams.
