Beginning Connecticut Farmers Receive Climate Smart Microgrants

Eighteen new and beginning farmers in Connecticut are receiving microgrants from UConn Extension to help them implement new climate smart farming practices. The microgrants up to $2,400 are for essential equipment, tools, seeds, soil amendments, installation costs paid to contractors, and farm field preparation. They were funded through a Connecticut Department of Agriculture Climate Smart Farming: Agriculture and Forestry Grant given to UConn Extension. UConn Extension notes that thanks to these microgrants, farmers just starting out have a tangible opportunity to implement innovative practices they would otherwise have to put off until they have more disposable income. Farmers who can implement climate smart practices as they start their farming career will be better prepared to combat the effects of climate change as they grow their businesses.
