European Research Evaluating Oats for Sustainable Production

The Innovation Centre for Organic Farming in Denmark is working with partners on the AVENUE project to improve oats for sustainable production by developing reliably nutritious and climate-resilient cultivars. Project researchers are evaluating more than 200 oat varieties for their nutritional characteristics and performance under different environmental scenarios in field trials in Sweden, Denmark, and Scotland. The project leader Sidsel Birkelund Schmidt explains, “The goal is to identify a ‘super oat’ with high nutritional value and stable performance in sustainable organic farming.”
